  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

How the hell do you fully beat dermatitis?

Sky-O

Wise Old Thumper
We have it 'under control' but we can't shake it completely, and he's now been on meds for a month for it. the fur is regrowing, but its still flakey if we stop the meds (which is why we suspect its not mites).

Any ideas please?

Bathing with cooled boiled water, salty water, Savlon (which worked the best out of everything), and Septrin and Convenia and various combinations. I'm supposed to try Seleen (?) Shampoo but I'm not sure I'm keen on that.

He was also on Metacam to start with.

The dermatitis arrived before any vaccinations and around the time Wish started feeling rough (but its Autumn who has it), on the 'scruff' of his neck.

Why don't you contact Gorgeous Guineas and try some of their lovely stuff? They have lotions, potions and shampoos for all sorts of skin problems. I've used them on the dogs as well as the piggies. All based on essential oils and natural ingredients and no nasty chemicals.

Have you tried Ivermectin? I can totally recommend the Beapher spot-on ivermectin...some others I've used are nowhere near as good.

Other meds will discourage mites (maybe by smothering them?) which might be why you see some improvement.

Remember that you need 3 separate treatments 7-10 days apart.
