  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Do you have more than one vet- if so why?

Do you have a special vet and a routine treatment vet? How do vets feel about you using another vet. Mine are very funny about it- all the ones i've been too. They see it as unethical.

i have 2 in my town.

1 is rabbit savvy, one is not.
funnily, the rabbit savvy vet is cheaper.

for neuter and emergency, i will use the rabbit savvy vet.
but he will be going for injections etc at the other vet, because it is closer and less stressful for him (i can walk there rather than getting a taxi or going on the bus)

Yes. One branch I go to has many specialists and I like this branch best but I do go to other vets sometimes. I don't know if they really know or not but they advise another vet if they don't know enough about a particular problem so I doubt they would have any problem with it. You have the right to go to any vet you like so I don't know why a vet would actually let you know they're upset... :? I mean, that seems like it would make them look bad... of course they want customers to always use them so they make more money that way but they shouldn't be funny about it.

I would be very dubious about using two different Vets as IMO continuity of care is essential. So if the two Vets are not in contact with each other then treatment given by Vet B may actually be harmful if he/she were to be unaware of a treatment given by Vet A.

Also, I think our relationship with our Vets has to be based on mutual trust. This cannot be established if we are going back and forth between Vets with neither knowing what is happening.

I have a vet for my rats/ferrets and one that I take the cats, dogs and rabbits to.

The rat & ferret vet practice is small with just one vet so I see him every time, whereas my other vets practice has 3 vets and I will see any one of those. They tend to see a illness through to the end, so it will be the same vet at each follow-up appointment.

I use a different vet for my rats and ferrets because he works with them more, he prefers working with the smaller furries. I take my rabbits to the other vets because I know I have a rabbit genius at one of the other branches, so his knowledge and experience is easily accessible, and if necessary, I could easily go and see him in person :D

No, I stick with the one vet but I can see why it's tempting to go to another one simply for vaccinations. My vets are dear, but worth it, and i would never go anywhere else for medical matters and while I do get my vaccinations done there too, it is a bit galling knowing they arealot cheaper elsewhere but I wouldn't simply because when they jave their jabs they get their teeth checked which goes on their file which in turn keeps up my side of the obligation to Petplan for dental checks.

i have used the same vet for over 2o years for my dogs and rabbits (she is excellent) but i have to use a different one for the horses as she doesn't treat livestock. :)

I agree with this. I usually see the head vet at our practice but purely by chance Bluebell saw one of the other vets for his URI from a sister branch as she was covering his shift. As a result we are now schedualing his appointments when she is at my practice so that I am getting the best advice as to how he's progressing and what to try next. As much as I love my normal vet because he didn't see Bluebell initially it would be very hard for him to assess if there was any improvement/deterioration. If for whatever reason she is not in my practice she'll give me a phone consult or pass info to my normal vet.
