What's the best thing to use to do this- staple gun?

That would work, you could also go with some clout nails. Those are the ones with a big fat head and a short shaft, the type you use for shed felt etc.

I use bungy ties (elastic ropes with hooks on the end) and weigh down the top with small patio slabs (you could equally use bricks or similar...I only use slabs because I got them for free)

I use nails where I can and bungies on the bits I need to be able to undo for access.

I just tuck mine under very securely. Never had a problem.
