  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

My big old slob of a rabbit "Rio" will be seven years old next month. He's a "mongrel" bit of dutch and lop in there. He's best described
as a mix lop!

|He;s been at the vet over the month or so .||Not feeding well etc,The vet gave him the usual gut stimulant drugs etc, and I said no Fibreplex..it goes everywhere excep[t in the bun..! He's usuallu a good feeder etc.He is eating his grub...however he has a little gurl "Cleo" wife hoovering up what he doesn't eat.She is a tub,I will state that,I have to wash her bum every week..sigh.It's difficult .Hay hay and more hay....will they live on it...will they hell!:(

Has Rio had a full Dental examination ? Dental problems may well be the primary cause of his GI tract hypomotility.

You need to separate Rio and Cleo at feeding times to make sure that they get the appropriate amount of food. If Cleo is taking in too much protein/carbohydrate and is overweight then that will explain her 'messy bum' problem. Over-feeding will eventually cause serious health issues so I would advise you to alter their feeding regime to accommodate their very different individual needs.
