Advice please. Rang new vets they said they give a Myxi booster every 6 months

Hi I need some advice please. I have always had my bunnies immunised against myxi and VDH. At my old vets this was done every year.

Phoned new vets and the nurse said they have always given bunnies a 6 monthly myxi booster, however my old vets didn't.

Asked about costs for spaying. £99.90
The injections are £24.90 or £39.90 for both bunnies, however Sunshine is not due for another few months. Then the booster would be extra.

Has my old vets not done it correctly or do different vets do it differently ?

They should be given the myxi jab every 6 months. Sounds like you have got a good vet to me. Spay is expensive but to have a rabbit savvy vet is worth the extra cost:D
 
Most vets will vaccinate once every six months, some vets do it once every 4 months, its uncommon for it to be once a year, to be honest.
 
I have my bunnies vaccinated twice a year for mxy. It gives me peace of mind. I know that it cannot guarantee 100% protection but prevention is better and cheaper than cure.

Rather pay for their vaccs, than not pay, and hope they never contract it.

For 9 years I have been taking my bunnies to the old vets. Now if I hadn't joined RU I would never have known. You would think you could trust a vet more than anyone with your bunnies health.

So I guess Sunshine would be due now for a myxi as it is over 9 months.

So happy I joined. I have learnt more here in a few weeks then I have ever learnt from a vet.
Thanks so much for your help. Will also phone a vets recommended to me who is rabbit savvy. Just that they are alot further away.

Yes, I had a similar issue. I joined a different forum and from there learnt how incompetent my vet was. Had I joined earlier then I would have potentially saved the lives of 5 of my rabbits who was victims of vet ignorance, and saved even more suffering. Its truly horrific.

I now trust myself first, and everyone else second.
 
I have to travel a 2 hour round trip to get to my rabbit savvy vet:shock:

But it is so worth it, at least two probably three of my rabbits would have died at my local vet:(

In my experience some vets specialize at equine, canine, feline, bovine cases rather than bunnies!!! Best to see if there is a bunny savvy vet at whichever practice you chose.

Until quite recently many vets really did not have much experience of rabbits other than the basics. I don't mean to offend anyone and I hope I haven't. It is just that rabbit knowledge really has come on in leaps and bounds in recent years. Brilliant.:D

Also us, the rabbit owners want higher and better standards of care.

Medication is definately more specific for rabbits.

I am not a vet....just a bunny owner for 16 years.

Loving every minute of it!!!!!!

Thats awful. I can say he did save Nancy's life with her 2nd operation. The first vet was an emergency vet who operated and left some dead skin behind. A few days later it turned into necrosis. 10 days later my vet had to operate.

However, my partner still wonders to this day if he had made a quicker diagnosis with our cat, instead of saying it was a thyroid problem from blood tests, and later finding out it was kidney failure, that she could have been treated earlier and lived alot longer. She was 17 and a half but she could have had a few more years. Breaks my heart.

Ours is about an hour round trip for the journey. By the time the rabbits are put into carriers, waiting in the waiting room, seeing the vet, back out to the car, back home and out of carriers again it gets on for two hours though. :shock:

Oh and yeah, go for twice a year :) also try to get them so they have one March/April time so they are fully immunised for the start of summer.

Just phoned the vet that is recommended and such a lovely girl on the phone.
They too do the 6 monthly booster.

Bit of another dilemma as I see the new vet I have used is also listed as a savvy vet on a rescue site. However someone on the same rescue site recommends the one I phoned as better.

The one I have used recently did mention straight away uterine cancer. My old vets never did.

Should I stay with the new one that is local ? My partner mentioned he was so much better than my old vet. I just wonder as my Nancy passed away there, if the other vet could have saved her. However, didn't know of them at the time.

Or am I doing to many buts and what ifs. Certainly he seems to know alot more about bunnies than my old vet and does carry out alot of spayings.

Obviously my old vets in London was not rabbit savvy.

The new one is listed as a savvy vet and seems to know alot about rabbit care. This is the one Nancy was treated at.

Adding another one is just confusing matters.
 
Any way you could start a thread asking what people in your area think of the new and IMO better vet is like with rabbits?

You may need to bump it up a few times:)
 
I haven't vaccinated any of mine yet!! didnt even know they needed injections untill i came on here, they are not living together tho, i plan to get all neuted and in a new hutch and then save up and get them vaccinated and get things done properly!!

Out of interest can I ask which vets you are considering using as I am only just down the motorway and rehome to your area and would like to know about the vets around Sunbury.

I can recommend a couple of places near you and wonder if they are the same places you have explored already.

:wave: It all comes as a shock, the amount of things rabbits need doesn't it:shock::lol:

I don't know if you are but Personally I would get them vacs first:)

I no they idealy need doing first but I need to get them bonded first, mum is gettin fed up of smartie in the kitchen aha !
 
Google bunny savvy vets. Somewhere on my travels in cyberspace I am sure that I have seen a website recommending such vets, or at least recommending vets and then mentioning their specialist subjects.:D

Good luck in finding one.
