  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

VHD vaccinations

Which one do you use?

Cylap
Lapinject
Something else

What are your thoughts on the NEW one that is out? I can not remember its name?

There was one called Cunical, a water-based vaccine, was withdrawn from the UK market in 1997.

Which one do you think it better side effect wise and less likely to cause problems in a statis prone bun?

First time round Artie, Esme, Rudy and Tink had Cylap and had no problems with it but I've since had them all vaccinated with Lapinject. When I spoke to vet (Ruth) at Harcourt-Brown's she said they get Lapinject but will use Cylap if they can't get Lapinject. I forgot to ask about Anivac, but Binky and Shadow had Lapinject recently, just remember to ask next time I'm there.

Anivac with no side effects:)

Ditto. As usual mine were down a little bit and the mites I suspected they might have had took hold more and showed symptoms whereas before they hadn't. Reduced immunity for a few days is that's usual with any vaccination I believe.

I had Cylap the first few times (or rather my rabbits did). Roo had a slight reaction to her second year with Cylap so for the 3rd year I ordered Lapinject with no reactions. I'll see what the vet say when they come up this time.

Cylap and Lapinject contain pretty much the same ingrediants so it may just be the case that Cylap is used a lot more often so there are more reported side effects. But Lapinject is used less often so side effects haven't been logged. Anecdotal evidence from this forum suggests pretty strongly that Cylap causes minor reactions in a significant number of cases and occassionally a serious reaction.

Anivac uses the same sort of active ingrediant but uses a different suspension to deliver it. It's so new that you can't really tell whether there are any common side effects. Given the type it is speculated that there should be fewer side effects.

If my memory serves me correctly, the side affects caused by Cylap are due to it being an oil suspension instead of whatever they use for Anivac, and not the actual drug:? Jack's Jane will know more:oops:

Also my and Schuette's very rabbit savvy vet said it has been used in, I believe, Holland for a long time with no reported side effects. I know it has been used somewhere for a long time anyway, so not really new, just new to this country:)

Cylap and Lainject are in mineral oil suspension, Anivac isn't. That's how I understand it anyway
