  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Further to Sky O's thread about VHD found in a vaccinated rabbit, please read this link about the recent discovery of a new strain of the disease.

PLEASE GET YOUR RABBITS VACCINATED AGAINST VHD IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY AS AN UNVACCINATED RABBIT STANDS NO CHANCE OF SURVIVAL.

Thank you for this. I will be watching this thread with interest as my 2 new guys are due their vacs next month.

Does anyone know the reasoning behind only using Lapinject the day it is opened as I don't think my vet sticks to that although I do know that a new vial was used last time I went for a VHD vac. Would be nice to have the scientifc explanation at hand if I need to query it.

Any idea whether Cylap or Lapinject offers better cover?

I believe all three VHD vaccines are produced in exactly the same way and have the same active ingrediant, so will offer the same protection. I think the only difference between the three are the non-active ingrediants.

I think they all have to be used the day they are opened. Cylap comes in individual doses though so you only open what you use. Lapinject comes in vials containing multiple doses, so once opened you have to use them all or throw the rest away.

Stator - that's what I thought too. Will have to do some research into why this is the case so I can argue my point at the vets if I need to.
