Wild bunny vids

Beatrix Potter

Mama Doe
Oh my goodness I've just found these on the computer! Brings back very happy memories of handrearing the wild bunnies  Sadly only one survived which was Spudsey who is now almost four:love: She is the one in the bowl eating hay and can't get enough of the milk! Just had to share these with you but please ignore my voice

Wow

Brings back so many memories for me with Freddie too. It's such an amazing thing to do, but sooo heartbreaking at the same time

 Sorry we couldn't get together Saturday did you have a good time yesterday?

Well...the wild bunnies.....my o/h found them in our allotment whilst he was rotavating the ground  Thankfully he had stopped rotavating for a minute and decided to start pulling some weeds out with a fork...he realised the ground was a bit loose and started to investigate and then found a nest with what he thought was baby rats! He'd never seen baby buns before. He didn't know what to do with them but knew they couldn't stay in our plot so we put the nest in a cardboard box and left them outside the plot hoping mum would find them. We never realised that we could have actually moved the nest and re-buried it elsewhere.

It was pretty scary as it was very cold and we thought if Mum didn't come back they may have been taken by a fox or died of cold or starvation. anyway mum did come back and it was heart breaking. She came in and dug the most enormous hole ever (more like a trench) in our plot looking for them. She did this a few times and after another night we decided that she was not going to find them so brought them home.

I went to Johnstons vets thinking that i would have to get them to put them out of their misery but Lindsay said that it was possible to hand rear them. I'd also read this and at this point had made my first visit to RR :) The vet didn't seem too optimistic and there was obviously a worry that they had mxy but they were literally 2-3 days old and hadn't thank goodness. so then I had the most wonderful job of hand rearing them!

Wasn't really sure what I was going to do with them to be honest as was quite busy with the hand rearing....it took me hours! But it was worth it. We ended up naming them :oops:Spudsey (cause she looked like a round potato compared to the others who were all boys), Carrot, Parsnip and Radish because of where they were found.

Eventually lost carrot and parsnip through bloat and were left with Spudsey and Radish. Thought they were both going to make it and had made arrangements for them to go to someone on here who had a wild bunny enclosure but unfortunately that didn't work out. I didn't think releasing them into the wild was a good idea as we had gone about things the wrong way...bunnies used to sit on our laps and were very friendly .

After six weeks and a trip to wales  we got back home and Radish was dead the next morning :cry:He wasn't as strong as his sister and I think the trip was too much for him. So we were left with our lickle madam Spuds.
Phew! Thats about it! Could have found my old post about this but felt like repeating the story!

Some other time  I did thanks yeah, sore legs today as I walked Nugget (the pony) up and down the drive to see how his poorly hoof is doing :)

wow quite a story! Spudsey is one lucky little girly  I cant belive you took them all the way to wales

I know.....was going to give them both to Lindsay for the week but she was worried that they might not take to her as I had been doing all the feeding. They were in a photocopy box :shock:stuffed with loads of hay on my lap whilst we were travelling, and when we got there they had the run of the in laws utility room...however they both decided that they wanted to explore the bungalow further and had a right run round much to my father-in-laws delight who had really taken to them!
