  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

VHD Injections: Are there any side effects?

Alpha Buck
Peanut had her VHD jab yesterday, she was absolutely fine afterwards but today she is a little quiet and I noticed that a couple of her normal dry poos were a bit wet and sticky, not quite diarrhea and not caecotroph, but it still concerned me. She's sitting at the back of her cage and has only come out to use the litter tray in the lounge, she's prefers this one for some reason, and then she runs back into her cage. I've given her some hay where she's sitting and she's been munching on this which is good but I just wanted to know if this is normal, I've read that they can be quiet for a day or 2 after but I'm still a bit concerned.

Yes the VHD vaccine can make the Rabbit feel 'off colour' for about 48 hours.

Just make sure that Peanut continues to eat, drink, poo and wee. Hopefully he will fee much brighter tomorrow. If he continues to give you cause for concern I would call your Vet for advice.

Thanks Jane, I'll keep an eye on her and see how she is. She's eaten hay but none of her pellets yet. She's hiding in her cardboard box which she never does so I've attached a bottle near to where she's sat and she's actually munching more hay than she normally does. I think she's always been quite good like that, it's like she knows to eat more hay if she's not feeling 100%.

Same here!! My bun had her first VHD jab on Friday, and really tucked into her hay. She had always been a good hay eater, but has slowly been getting worse after being seperated from her sisters. She was completely shunning everything else in favour of it though, and when she'd have normally been flopped out (she flops out alot!) she was up munching more hay. I remarked to OH about it at the time, saying it was as if she knew she should have more!!
