Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

I know im getting myself worked up for nothing.. but casper is on a small dose of metacam daily now.. my vet has informed me with the risks of kidney and liver failer with metacam long term.. i know he cannot live without his pain relief now and im not thinking of stopping it. I just wanted to know.. what happens when kidney or liver failer kicks in? is that then the end? :( i feel casper is living on a knife edge.. he either goes with pain or goes with liver or kidney failer  im sorry i guess im still getting used to the fact of long term painkillers  been bugging me every day.

I have had numerous Rabbits on longterm Metacam for months, some at a moderate rather than low dose. None have had any adverse side effects at all.

As with every form of medication there will always be a risk of adverse side effects. So the risks v benefits have to be taken into account. I would much rather a Rabbit of mine had a pain free remainder of their life, even if the meds given to achieve this *might* shorten their life. A pain free 6 months is better than a painful year, IMO xx

Yes, i would rather him have a happy life :) i am going to have blood tests every 6 months to make sure about his kidneys. thank you for this.. i know in my head i know it, i just feel so hopeless

Daisy was on 0.6 - 1 ml of metacam a day for years. It prolonged her life.

I think you have to weigh up any risk, with quality of a painfree life.

Its definitely a case of quality over quantity when it comes to situations like this. As harsh as this might sound, with mine, I would rather they have a shorter, happier life, than a longer life and not risk kidney or liver failure.

Wish is on an ever increasing dose of Metacam and if she gets issues then I will let her go when she is ready and be so grateful for the months we had. She drinks like a trojan, and always has done, which helps.

Can you encourage Casper to drink more?

Badger is on long term steroids which increase the risk of infection and suchlike, but he needs those steroids to live.

Deal with today, not the what ifs and the maybes that never happen. Enjoy today otherwise you lose today worrying about a tomorrow that may never arrive.

Artie has been on 6 drops of Metacam every day for ages now (I'm guessing about 18 - 20 months). He's also on a diuretic which *could* cause kidney damage. He's seen by a specialist every 6 weeks (to express his bladder) but I'm sure if his condition was being affected by the drugs she would pick up on it. *Touches wood* He did have regular x-rays at first but not for about a year or so. I've just been told to not worry about potential side-effects. When I start in 'worry mode' she just says, "Look at him!"

What the others said really - concentrate on making him happy:love:

just seen this. i had the same concerns. and my vet said that the warning has to be given because metacam belongs to a group of medicines which have been known to cause problems. however, there has never been any from actual metacam but they have to give the warning just incase.

bisc and matt have been on metacam for about 2 years now and have had no problems.

again, i agree that them having quality of life is worth the risk. not that we have a choice as they can't not have it.

but after speaking with the vet i am fine with them having it now. xxx
