  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Help please?

Young Bun
So last Thursday (20th) I was cleaning out the bunny shed - bunnies were in the garden & Mark started 'vomiting'. Now I know rabbits can't vomit but there was definietly regurgitated food coming out of his mouth. So I took him straight to the vet & he gave him a Metaclopramine (sp?) injection to get his guts moving (he said the stomach felt full & the intestines felt empty) & we both thought there was a blockage. He really perked up after the jab & was eating well and pooing (so some food had to be getting through his system) but he's still vomiting/regurgitating.

He's been back every day this week for the same injection & he's been started on Baytril as he's 'purring' - we think some of the food has gone into his lungs & now he has a lung infection :(

He had an X-ray today - vet said the lungs look a bit inflamed but are well inflated but couldn't really see a blockage or tumour or anything... so I am really confused!

Has anyone had a similar experience or have any ideas as to what could be wrong?

ETA: He's lost weight but it was stable until Wednesday but he's gone from 2.1kg to 1.9 :(

I think Becky86 had a rabbit called Scamp who was regugitating food, but I'm not entirely sure. It might be worth searching, although be prepared that the thread is very sad as Scamp had a multitude of problems and did sadly die. Hopefully that won't be the case for your bunster, but there might be something of some use in Scamp's thread if my memory is serving me correctly.

You dont use Animal Ark Vets do you ????????????

Is you Rabbit receiving a non steroidal anti-inflammatory such as Metacam ?

No, Goddards.

No he isn't on metacam, I thought that was for pain relief.

He is a lot better today - still regurgitating but not as often, still gurgly & sneezy but not constantly like it was. Still not his usual cheeky self though

I think my vet is out of ideas :?

The specialist vet we keep getting referred to in Essex is South Beech Practice at Wickford. Would that be reachable for you?

His name is William but I am not sure of his exact contact details.

http://www.wylievets.com/ This is where William works, he's at the Upminster branch, it's very near the A127 so easily accessible to many places. We're actually quite lucky in Essex to have a few exotics referral practices: William is one of them, Lawton in Harold Hill is another and South Beech is the other.

If your vet is already talking about a referral then maybe they already have someone in mind, it's probably one of these three. Given the choice I personally would go for William and my vet already knows that I would ask for referral to him if I needed. I'm just very jealous that he is LouiseandGus's normal vet!

Good luck for your little one and I hope you can find someone who can help him x

No !!! Quite the opposite. I would not touch them with a barge pole !!

Good luck xx

I'm surprised at your comment. Many vets are not specialists in rabbits but are good vets. Very few vets have a qualification in exotics even though they may be very knowledgable with rabbits through much experience.
I certainly can't see the problem in a vet contacting another vet for a second opinion -particularly in unusual cases- I would say this was good practice.
(After all- doctors and consultants confer with one another don't they).

I do hope you find the cause of your bunny being sick and are able to get treatment.

I believe Jacks Jane was referring to Animal Ark vets with her barge-pole comment :) they seem to have a bad reputation. In reply to 'is it that practice?' as in 'that vet practice (Animal Ark)' instead of 'the vet's practice of referring'. I had to read it twice too :)

I would definately take them up on that referral, a specialist vet may know whats wrong, hope it goes well.

I think you misunderstood my post. I meant I would not touch Animal Ark Vets with a barge pole as I know of NUMEROUS cases of negligence that have occurred there. I most definitely was not implying that an Exotics Referal was a bad idea, quite the opposite.

The negligence at AA Vets has caused the death of at least 2 Rabbits and just a couple of weeks ago another one almost went the same way
