Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Scabs Under Chin

Hi,

I noticed that Daisy had a dry, scabby chin last time i lifted her up. I phoned the vet and she said this is a common problem for female rabbits who drink from water bowls. They suggested raising her bowl higher or switching to a bottle. Does anyone else have this problem with there rabbit? Is there any other solutions or types of bowl that can help prevent this?

Thanks,

Laura

Has she had it checked to make sure its not fungal? Also, has she had her teeth checked?

I've only had one rabbit who used to dunk her dewlap, but we sorted that after wtaching how she drank and then experimenting with different things to try and prevent it. We used to stand the water bowl on a couple of bricks for her. None of my other ladies have ever had that problem though.

One of my old girls, Smokey, developed this recently. The scabs were mainly at the sides of her mouth with hair loss under her chin.

Smokey had a precautionary dental just in case her teeth were troubling her, and the vet gave me some cream called Surolan to rub into her chin in case of fungal infection.

Luckily she seems to be on the mend now...well apart from a stubborn eye ulcer that's taking an eternity to heal, a respiratory disorder, and age related problems...we're not sure of her age, but she's at least 8 years old.
