  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

ear wax

mini lop1

Wise Old Thumper
in lop rabbits, locksley ever since i got him ,seems to sometimes get it building up on outer ears soo i clean it up when i notice it, he doesn't have earmites or any other ear problems, just gets more wax, does anyone elses lop rabbits get this, whats best way to clean them

We had this with Vinnie, she was an up-ear, but when her EC kicked in there were various body parts which kicked off.

When we mentioned it to the vet, he gave us a solution which would loosen any ear way in there and help bunny shake it out. He said we could clean the outer ear if it looked like they were struggling but that they were likely to short themselves. I'll see if I can find the bottle of the ear stuff for you, I keep the bottles after I've used them so I know what's been useful in the past.

If the wax is excessive then a drop of olive oil in the ear then massaging the ear base will free up the wax and you can then remove it with a bit of cotton wool. However, dont push a cotton bud into the ear canal and I would not actually do anything re ear cleaning until a Vet has checked the ear canals with an otoscope :)
