  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Cleaning out a bunny's ears

Bindi

Warren Scout
So, Bandit can't clean or scratch her ears any more and I have to clean them out for her... At the moment I've come to recognise the face she pulls when her ear is itchy and I go and scratch it for her, but I realise that this is probably due to build-up of wax in the ear (the ears are clean apart from a little bit of clear wax) so I wanted to ask advice on how to keep her ears clean. I can ask the vets tomorrow but thought I'd put a post down tonight, especially if anyone has any home remedies that are cheaper than something from the vets but just as effective.

I use a drop of Olive Oil and then massage the ear base. This loosens up the wax which can then be removed with a piece of cotton wool. Dont be tempted to poke a cotton bud into the ear canal though.

I would not put anything into her ears until the Vet has checked them and given the OK for you to do so :)

When Kermit's ears used to get really gunky, i would massage the base of the ear, then put the tip of my baby finger just inside the top of the ear and some would come out that way.

I did use cotton buds too, but only on the part of the ear visible, never far in!
