Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Bad vet... need a new one in Aberdeen

New Kit
i've been referred to this forum by a few internet friends because they were shocked with the treatment my rabbit received at a certain aberdeen vet. Basically, I took my female rescue bun, Violet, in for a spay which would have cost £60. When we went back to pick her up, the vet told us she had been pregnant and about a week from her due date, but due to the effects of the anaesthetic the kits would not be viable and he removed them. I only adopted Violet a week ago, so she was pregnant in the shelter/her last home.

For the bunny abortion -cringe- we were billed kind of over the odds. A few people have said to me in other rabbit communities that he should have carried out a pre-operative check that would have confirmed her pregnancy. Obviously if I had known, I would have been shocked and a little scared at the idea of unplanned kits, but I would have let her have them and found them homes.

So yeah. Does anyone know a good, rabbit-savvy vet in Aberdeen?

Thats a shame. Hope your girl is gettign over her op ok.

There are a few members from up your neck of the woods, so hopefully one will come along with a good vet recommendation. x

Thanks Kermit, nice to see a Hamiltonian. :p I lived there for a brief spell.

Good grief, thats nothing to shout about.....were you at Bell College?

haha! I wasn't going to mention that it is a bit of a rubbish place to live in. No, my family moved there about 5 years ago, I would have been 15 when I lived there for a year, and I still visit family there sometimes. I seem to remember there is an over-abundance of traffic lights (and buckfast bottles thrown into our garden!)

Where about's did you stay? It actually is like everywhere else, has good and bad parts.
Traffic lights?? Have never noticed!

Close to Chatelherault park. I seem to remember as you're coming out of the town to the north there's a veritable galaxy of traffic lights. I could be wrong, but it's almost legendary with my cousin who uses that route for work. :p

Hi, I hope it wasn't my vets!
I use Donview vets and have found them very good, they are getting better and better in the small animal side and I feel confident in their work.

bridge vet?

I use them and I`am not happy at all now. 1st time they cut my rabbits ears. Second time... long story is dieing now.
Can anyone recommend rabbit specialists in Aberdeen. Anyone heard about Ardene House? Are they good with small animals?

I'm sorry, I have mo idea about Aberdeen vets. Aurora in bucksburn are good, I know 3 of them as they used to work at donview and they are all committed and experienced in small animals.
I would suggest you look at the out of hours costs too, some vets now use a dedicated out if hours company ( either first vets or vets now, can't remember) but their prices are diabolical!

I'm sorry to hear you've both had such bad experiences with your vets. :( I'm bunnyless at the moment but can highly recommend Kevin at Ashgrove Vet Centre, which is up near the Sainsburys at Berryden, between that and the Kittybrewster delivery office. He is very good and has an interest in rabbits (the receptionist referred to him as 'the bunny man'), is willing to listen and explains what's going on, qualities which I love in a vet.

My last girly had an enlarged heart and although he'd never seen it in a rabbit before, he went off and found out about different meds, which gave us an extra five months with her (I know that doesn't sound much time but with her condition it was a fair whack :D). I was most impressed that he didn't have the 'know-all' attitude that I have come across in other vets, and he explained what was going on in detail when I asked (think the poor bloke must be seeing question marks in his dreams from me :lol:). He was also fantastic when we eventually came to the end of the road.

Anyway, I will stop yabbering on. Basically, I find him very good. I would specifically ask for him though, I wasn't impressed with one vet there - she grabbed a bun by the scruff with no other support and let her dangle - but she left a while back. Another I saw obviously wasn't interested in buns but was competent enough. :)

I can't comment on Ardene House, I remember looking at them when I originally moved here but I ruled them out for some reason, I can't remember why though so it may have been something like transport problems, so don't rule them out. Phone or email and ask loads of questions and see how you get on ;)

I know lousilverfox on here is with Town and Country who have branches all over the place, but I don't know what they're like, I think she had good recommendations for them though so they may be good to look at too. :D

I live in Aberdeen and I am with Ardene House - they have been brilliant to my Nutmeg. All the staff are lovely, and they always take good care of she goes in. There is a branch in Bridge of Don, but Kingswells is the main veterinary hospital. We tend to use both. Kingswells is convenient for out of hours as it is also home to Vets Now, who have also been fantastic for looking after my poorly bun in times where food is not appealing to her!

I would definitely recommend Ardene. If you go to Kingswells, Mark Bayliss is our regular vet, and Ruth Scott and Bridge of Don. I think perhaps there is another branch in the city centre, but I don't know where it is.

Hope this helps :)
