Bunny in need! Help...

Hey everyone. Right i need help.

My friend has just emailed me and asked for my help/advice. I hope you can all help me.

She has a Male dutch bunny (i havnt seen), that keep having to have operations on his back teeth as tey keep getting spikes on. Now each time she goes they charge £200 and she cannot afford this anymore.

She rang the RSPCA and they said they can take him in but they will put him tosleep  Now i no this bunny is well cared for and much loved.

Do you think she has a bad vet that isnt doing it right and just wants money? Can back teeth be taken out? Are there any bunny rescues that will take him and help him? Im stuck i dont want him to be put to sleep

Any advce would be great :)

I know there are people here that pay less than that for spurs on the back teeth. About 100 I think? It depends on bad the spurs are and on the vet. Hoping she can find a vet that charges less

It also depends on how the vet does the dental.

Some vets will just burr off the spurs, others with burr down the problem teeth to almost flat, giving more time between dentals.

Removing back teeth is a specialist and risky op. I was quoted £1000.

I think Guy Carter at Medivet in Watford will do conscious dentals. I don't know how much they charge, but I'm guessing it will be a lot less than £200. Not sure if Watford is near you?

My vet charges me between £40-£60 for a dental, so i would definitely see if there is a cheaper option and if they can burr the teeth right down to the gumline.

What is his diet like? How often does he need a dental?

He is fed excel nuggets, lots of hay and veg. I said to lower his excel and give him even more hay. I hope this is the right thing to say.

Yup, I think that's a good thing to say.

I've got a lot of dental bunnies and, for mine, they get two Science Selective every day (when they were on Excel they got a pinch- about 5-6 pellets), and then fresh hay twice or three times a day, and this has really dragged out the distance between dentals. My vet says they are all very healthy generally and they don't show any problems with having fresh only as a treat and minimal pellets.

She can also try a variety of different hays to try and enocurage him to eat more. Often cheaper, bale hay can be far preferred to some shop bought stuff, but there are more expensive hays that also can tempt a bunny, but again, not appropriate for money issues.

Its not appropriate for this bunny, but with others I have found a friend can also help improve the distance between dentals (my Dusk was every 14 weeks, but since being with Candyfloss he has had one and they have been together 18 months, and he is now just coming up to a year since his last dental) because they are happier and so eat more hay.
