  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Hi

Before Fifi was speyed, she used to grunt and growl a fair bit and actually at times, did become aggressive. Is your bun pulling any fur (another hormone related sign)? If she was born in June she will have reached sexual maturity by now.

I don't consider myself expert enough to talk about the poo situation, hopefully another member can offer some thoughts on that, but you're doing the best thing by speaking to your vet.

It's worthing that though speying can seem a 'dreadful operation' it is actually beneficial for a number of reasons aside from pregnancy - unspeyed does have an 80% chance of developing uterine cancer. You'll get lots of advice on the operation from your vet and lots of support on here too

Let us know what the vet says and how your little one gets on.

Smelly wee and incontinence and excessive drinking are all possible signs of a urinary tract infection. I would pop her to a bunny savy vet asap

She's probably reaching the age when the hormones kick in. Territorial weeing and a change in smell are typical signs.

As PL says, talk to your vet if you're worried

I missed that operation bit

It's either hormonal or something like a UTI - best to get a vet to tell you which ideally asap because if she does have an infection she will need treatment as soon as really.

Try to find out if any one of the vets in your practice specialises in rabbits. Ask to speak to a vet or veterinary nurse(not the receptionist)
  • Ask how many rabbits they neuter each month. (hopefully lots)
  • Ask if they recommend that rabbits should be starved before the op? (they should say No-definitely not)
  • Ask if rabbits have pain relief after a spay(they should say yes)
  • Ask if they recommend rabbits are kept indoors in the warm for 24 hrs after a spay(they should say yes)

If you don't get the right answers it may be that your vets are not experienced with rabbits and you may want to look round for another vet.

You might want to start a thread saying which area you are in and ask if anyone can recommend a vet to you.

It hard to know who to chose with a new rabbit, but if you pick an experienced vet you should have no worries about the spay op.

I am fortunate to have a really good vet and he successfully spayed my bun at 9yrs old.

Do take your bun to the vet though as her problems may be an infection which would need clearing up before considering any op.
