  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Few questions......

Mitzeee is on the mend quite well but just a few things that are worrying me a little as im not a expert.

He doesnt poo very much at the moment and when he does he poos lots of really soft ones, then a bit tougher ones in a row say 6-7 squashed together then they start to become normal all be it a little smaller in size? We have recently taken him off him loxicom and baytril and been giving him zeptrin which was advised by the vets. While he was only those he was pooing so much and now it seems he will only poo once taking him out his little in house cage.

He also stopped drinking water for about a day but is back on it again now, whereas while on the meds he was non stop drinking.

He seems fine in himself and is eating and playing as normal, I just dont want to make sure noting is seriously wrong with him.

sometimes meds can affect their pooing or make them want to drink more. If in doubt ring your vets, don't be shy about discussing poop to the receptionists/the vet

how is he now?

Sounds like he has some excess caecotrophs or malformed caecotrophs amongst normal droppings. Lots of reasons for this from pain and stress to a starchy diet and not enough fibre, or more likely in his case antibiotics upsetting his normal caecal bacteria balance. Some probiotics would probably be very helpful and lots and lots of hay for the fibre will help too.

Yes I agree ask your vet for Fibreplex and just make sure there is plenty of hay and dried food and water maybe reduce down slightly the greens to get the gut back on par.
