Legislation - Lets get this changed FOR GOOD!

Julia123

Hi all, following on from the horrific situation in Horsford I would like to put an appeal out to anyone with legislation statistsics.

I want to put an action plan together to get things changed. I am in discussions with MMC and we are committed to making a change.

I/we want legislation changed giving rabbits a pet status - not livestock, leglislation changed to stop pet shops from selling bunnies and legislation changed to mean that ALL breeders need a licence, not just those that 'supply' the public. I also want to ensure that the pet animals act is amended to include all this and that checks are compulsory before licences are re-newed, which I would like to see on an annual basis...... I just don't know my facts about what is legal and what isnt????

Please, can anyone help me with the current legislation and stats and who governs them. I am aware of the Pet Animals Act 1951 and also Defra. I just am not sure of who controls these... when how etc

Thanks in anticipation...

ETA what would be ideal is a list of what is currently allowed and who governs this decision.

Sorry I can't help with the info.
This is so close to my heart please count me in, & don't let me miss a thread.

The RWF might be able to assist us and maybe help to start a serious campaign so we can can get the bandwagon rolling.
Petitions and demonstrations are needed.
Feel all Wolfie Smith if you are older enough to remeber Citizen Smith:lol:

Up until recently the RWA has steered themselves away from campaigning.

MMC is not frightened to get stuck in so why not join us in trying to make a massive difference to rabbits in the UK.

I want to help give rabbits a voice too.

After my horrible experience at the weekend and now seeing the appalling Horsford situation, I feel I really need to do something......but I don't know what. :(

Please count me in too, I feel very passionately about it too.

There is the Animal Welfare Act as well, dont know if you had that on your list.

Might also be worth looking in to what these do: http://www.cawc.org.uk/

They are the Companion Animal Welfare Council.

List of other legislation on this website: http://www.defra.gov.uk/wildlife-pets/pets/cruelty/index.htm

Sorry this is just a rushed response for tonight but will check back over the next few days and see if I can contribute at all.

Just seen this, I completely agree with you. I've got a law degree but unfortunately haven't specialised in animal welfare so if you have any legal enquiries I can try and help where I can. I want to be fully involved in this :)
WE NEED A CHANGE!

I'm in - in terms of the legislation question, that's about it - there is no legislation that is the problem - this needs to be supported by vets aswell - they make a substantial amount of revenue from the responsible pet ownership sector in this country - if we all followed the example of backyard breeders there would be no vaccination's/neutering happening.

You won't change the status from farmed animal but, you can lobby to get the 'rabbit' it's proper status as a pet and the conditions for 'farmed' rabbits revised and improved - it's unbelievable to me that it is the UK's 3rd most popular pet - generating millions in revenue for vets, suppliers of food, housing, supporting farmers by buying hay etc - and yet they are afforded no protection!? Why because simply we are living in the olden days, sitting back and accepting the crappy system and picking up the pieces time after time - protesting is the best form of getting a voice - maybe you need to link up with another animal rights organisation or two on this aswell? An electronic petition would be a good thing to run.

Re MMC - can the celebrity contacts on board invite anymore 'powerful' for want of a better word - people on board, Leona Lewis and Simon Cowell would be good - both are patrons for the WSPA - Leona would be a good one - she in turn would have more contacts.

It's going to be a long road, and uphill battle but, I will do whatever I can to help.

legislation - lets get this changed for good!

All breeders to be licenced and checked at least once a year:)
All animals not required for breeding purposes MUST be neutered:)

Ignore this sorry I didn't read first post clearly stating against pet shops selling and P & H is a pet shop

I'm in! It makes my blood boil everytime I think of Pets at Home and their 2 rabbits for what £30...like it's a flippin supermaket!! Grrrrr

They sold someone I know two female rabbits together once and told them there wouldn't be an issue with them living together...no comment on spaying! I get a phone call a day later asking for help as they keep attacking eachother!

I can't help with legal but any other support you may need let me know.

I've always liked the thought of legislation on the size of hutches sold for Rabbits. I think the size of some of them available are disgraceful!

No doubt this is a very daft idea of mine, but I will run with it anyway.

Someone like Michael Mansfield QC?? He is a human rights lawyer but is in this month's Vegetarian Living, saying how he also has a passion for animal rights....hence the being vegetarian....and is also one of Viva's Supporters: http://www.viva.org.uk/celebs/michael.html

Am I crazy for thinking that we could write to him???
