  • Please Note - Medical Advice

    Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

    You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

    We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

    Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Do you keep anything as a sort of rabbit first aid kit? I'd like to have a few things in case my rabbits become ill. Of course I'd take them to the vet if they became ill but I mean for more minor things that could be treated at home what sort of things would I need? For my guinea-pigs I have a mite shampoo, a mite cream, and tweezers, is this similar to what I'd need for rabbits?

I'd say keep it simple: unless you know what you're doing, then - as you say - you'd be guided by the vet who give you any medicines you need. I think of it as more 'stuff to have' then in a stressful situation you havent got to worry about getting it in.

My list:
* probiotics (to keep tummy healthy as possible when poorly and/or having antibiotics)
* baby wipes (cleaning fur)
* Critical Care fine grind (I cant get the usual Science Recovery/Critical Care that the vet gives me through a syringe to feed)
* heat pad (snugglesafe or similar)
* sudacrem (soothing any sore skin if fur comes away).

I do have various other bits'n'pieces accumulated over the past 4 years of course!
