it's so that when wild rabbits run away from a predator their white tails show' to warn other Rabbits to run 
but i guess thats only good for rabbits with white under tails lol

Rabbits use their tail as a form of communication - does (females) that are interested in breeding will twitch their tail to let the buck (male) know she is receptive. It is also used to signal danger - both when a predator has been spotted and when fleeing
