Same happened to me yesterday.. My girl Sadie wasnt eating.. Receptionist said they were fully booked!! I insisted on speaking to a vet ,who offered to open the surgery early this morning so she could see me...
Ive just got back now.. Had to leave her as sure enough.. she needs a dental!!
Glad Lola is doing ok

Could you change it to say the branch/area? It's just that Vets 4 Pets is a national franchise and people might be put off using the branch in their area if they read this.

I use Vets 4 Pets here in Nottingham and they are very good...they always tell you to bring a rabbit in the same day if he/she isn't eating.

Sadly not all Vets 4 pets will be as good as ours, sounds like you have pretty poor staff at yours. I wish vets would tell recptionists what constitutes an emergency :(

It happened to me many years ago when specialised vets simply did not exist, but fully trusted my vet : a bunny I had did not eat; and he told me at the time, no problem for a few days ! when I think of this now, I'm horrified by such incompetence !

When my Chloe who is subjet to stasis, stays one single day without wanting to eat, I dash to the vet straight away and he saved his life already twice by force-feeding an rehydatation

The receptionist needs talking too! I remember the recepitionist at my old vets told me I should starve Sebastian before his neuter! Deffinatly write to them :) I'm thankful that my branch of V4P is really good and the receptionist has bunnies of her own and the vn (who happens to married to the vet) has an intrest in bunnies :)

 That is very poor.

Please tell me that was not a vet nurse answering the phones.

[My vet has an admin who sorts out all the ghastly paperwork and diary but there is also has a vet nurse out the front who can be handed the phone if it sounds like it might be something urgent and need triage from a nurse to arrange when the appointment should be]

I can't say for definite as I don't know who the OP spoke to but I think often this is the crux of the problem. I'm lucky that my vet's phones are manned by the veterinary nurses (many of them have been there for years) so they tend to give very reliable info.

Unfortunately it's not always the case though and, while the veterinary care may actually be very good, they're let down by inadequate training of the staff manning the phones.

As the OP says, it's not such a problem with a bunny savvy owner who can push for a vet appt, but someone with less knowledge would think it's ok to wait. :(

That's awful! I completely agree you should write a letter of complaint. If receptionists at veterinary surgeons are in a position where they have to make decisions on the life of our pets they should be properly trained!

Good luck with Lola :)

That's partly why I'm so pleased with Trinity cos they have excellent and knowledgeable people manning the phones. :thumb: I was also quite impressed with the person on the phones for the emergency vet too, she was very knowledgeable.

We have Vets4Pets in Sunderland and we have never had any problem with them at all, vet Honor is brilliant we drive from Richmond in North Yorkshire to go there.
