Where do you buy your hay from?

Do you buy one after another has run out? Or do you bulk order from the net. I'm trying to work out what will be best and what works out cheaper. I don't want to buy alot in bulk and find it goes off so wanted to get a few opinions

I have 4 very large bales delivered from a farm once a week :)

:) do you know the owners of the farm? Or do farms in general sell hay. I wouldn't mind picking it up. I don't really know anywhere in Lincoln that sells hay, I buy from P & H but I want to get better quality for Pierre and thought it might be cheaper through the net or a local farm maybe.

I buy mine from here.

I normally buy a new bale when I have about a third to a quarter left. The old bale goes in empty megazorb sacks and the new bale in the box.

I also get my Burns dried stuff, my SS pellets and my Megazorb from here.

Then I buy a pack of oat hay (or oat, wheat and barley) and a pack of timothy hay every now and then from The Hay Experts. :) They have a handful in their trays every other day.

Farm will be cheapest as they sell in bales, so you get a lot more for your money. People tend to buy different types of hay online to give their rabbit variety or to encourage a bunny that doesnt eat a lot of hay or to get specialist dust free hay.

ask horsey people

Ask horsey people what farms they use. I don't know Lincs, but there are lots around here. We pay £3.50 usually, and we store the bale in a giant cardboard box in a dry outhouse - we find cardboard is less prone to condensation and therefore mould than plastic. A bale lasts us a fair while with 2 buns and 2 GPs - we use more in winter when they have less lawn to go at than in summer.

Good luck.

I go there cos I find it easier than waiting for a delivery. No idea if they deliver hay. It might be they don't so don't have it on the website.

Thanks for your replies everyone.

I went on the first link saw the dust free hay but not the megazorb maybe i'm not looking hard enough. Ah too far away if they don't deliver. Thanks for posting though :)

The farmway looks quite good found the megazorb. How long does the 85 litres last? I couldn't find timothy hay though just meadow hay.

I've just noticed this...
The Feed Barn
Our 5,000 sq.ft. feed barn with its huge stock of horse and pet feed, supplements, stable and pet requisites plus a delivery service was also selected as one of the top four finalists in the same nationwide competition to find the 'BEST FEED MERCHANT IN THE BUSINESS'

On this page http://www.frogpool.com/about-frogpool.html

So they might deliver. It's a place with different parts you see, there's the tack room, the feed barn, the restaurant. I just go to the feed barn bit.

I bought a sack of megazorb 23rd november, I use it in two littertrays that I clean out every 2 days, and I have about half left. Of course it depends how fast you use it, but hope that gives you an idea.

Hay experts deliver :) thats where I get stuff from. They dont sell bales of hay though.

I buy it by the bale from a local farm shop. :D

I usually buy one bale at a time and then buy a new one when the one I'm using has almost gone. The last couple of times I've been though, I've been buying two bales at a time to save me making extra trips in the bad weather.

I store the bales inside old duvet covers in the shed and have had no problems with it going 'off' or anything (& I only have two buns so don't get through a bale very quickly). As long as it can breathe (plastic is the worst for making it sweat) it will last for ages. :thumb:

Ohh thats alot then  at the moment I clean Pierre out weekly but replace the wood shavings where he pee's every other day, so with mega zorb would probably do the same but it would last quite a lot. I looked at the hay experts unfortunately at the moment it wasn't suitable as billing and delivery address have to be the same, but I'm working in my parents town soon so I can pick it up quite easily. Plan :D

I saw that but then I couldnt find the hay page hmmm :(

Yeah I don't understand why the bales aren't on there. :? Megazorb isn't either but the other stuff I get is. Very odd. You could always give them a call.

You wouldnt need to put it over the whole cage, just in his litter tray. Saves lots of monies :) easier to clean out too. Bear in mind I mix it with wooden cat litter sometimes and use hay as well so yours might go down quicker than mine depending what you use.

He hasn't got a litter tray as such. As a house bun I left him to go in his one place in his cage so that he didn't spray in random places and now I don't want to interfere with his placings. He has his corner in the cage so I can put mega zorb there and then put a mixture of hay and wood shavings to create a soft bottom. I'll still use newspaper as it adds that bit of protection from bacteria etc
