Female buns 'double chins'

Hope you all had a fabby Christmas.

Just wondering why some females develop a 'double chin' sorry dont know the proper name for it & others dont?

Orla has now got one & I find it rather funny, shes so small with this tiny little chubby chin! :lol: It hangs over into the water bowl, she makes such a mess!
 
It's a dewlap but I don't know much more than that...

Wiki says 'A fatty "dewlap" is also found on female rabbits, such as the New Zealand white rabbit. While pregnant, the female rabbit will pluck fur from the dewlap to line a nest for her babies.'

They're so cute.

Orla is so tiny, she the Thumbelina of the rabbit world. :lol: Her Dewlap makes her look so chubby, very cute indeed. :love:
 
It can occur in overweight males and females, it is also genetic for females and isn't solely reliant on hormones or when spayed or not spayed. Some very slim, early spayed rabbits can develop massive dewlaps (or 'plushies' as we call them here), and some overweight, never spayed ladies may not have them at all.

They tend to grow a thicker, denser fur there that they use to line their nest with.

Hi Sky-O, long time no speak! :wave:

She has gotten a little chubby as theyve been confined to the house due to bad weather, Im treating it as a little 'winter weight' & hopefully shift it in spring. Its such a tiny little dewlap on such a tiny little bun. :love:
