I was looking for my own interest at the RSPCA Branches and Centres. I have no idea if its of interest to anyone, but I found the info (on the RSPCA website, but not quite in this form) and didn't know what to do with it.:lol:

An RSPCA Centre is a Centre run from the national Charity and gets its funding from the National Charity, therefore, it has to stick to what the charity stipulates (such as not taking in strays, etc).

An RSPCA Branch is funded solely by itself, often run by a committee, but is a bit like a franchise and uses the RSPCA name. It is allowed to have its own policies, so they may take in strays, etc and ours asks for 50sqft permanent access for any bunny they rehome, depending on what the individual branch decides. I'm not saying they are necessarily better or anything, just different, with different policies, self funded and separate.

I was interested to see how many of which there were. I think its important to remember that each Branch gets tarnished with the opinion of the whole RSPCA, even though they are separate. As you can see, there are very few Nationally run Centres.

Well I think that would be me failing the home check and I thought mine were fairly well accommodated compared to the vast majority of 3ft from the pet shop hutches.
 
That is amazing Tracy just how many are branches.

And I think it's an important distinction to make because as you say, not all the rescues work in the same way. Some do so much with so little.

Its not a personal attack on anyone or their accommodation. Its just what the Committee decided to ask for from adopters at our RSPCA. Truth be told, I would fail it too with some of mine.

Yes, this was what astounded me. Very few are actually run by the RSPCA themselves.

We all want the buns to go to good homes but that would personally put me off applying even though mine have 8x4 kennel/run for the evening and the 7ft trixie run for the day and have time to freerange in the house some evenings through the summer. they did used to freerange in the yard but I stopped it as some cats moved into the street! Then again it may be a good thing to have that as a benchmark and start to make the public rethink rabbits housing and not just go straight for a 'bog standard' hutch

Up until recently I did all the home visits and the beauty of that is that they can state their rules, and then I can use common sense based on a lot of things like potential adopters attitude, gut feeling, stuff like that. Accommodation is merely one aspect of being a good owner. You can ahve the biggest accommodation in the world and be horrific and uncaring (come across a couple of these). Common sense when it comes to rehoming means a whole lot more.

I thought they got neutering fees, or at least a contribution towards them.
 
Poppy and Nino are both from Ashley Heath top of the top list so therefore a Centre. Nino was a stray, but maybe that was 3 yrs ago so things have changed?

It was a few years ago now for both of them but on all our visits ALL the bunny kennels were full, maybe this has changed too now with new policy?

Our homechecker however, although lovely, hadn't a clue about bunnies and what to look for in accomodation but had the basics, that it needed to be 6x2 and 6x4 (hutch and run) and they were very strict on this, we were told this was HO policy, but HO never seems to publish a precise figure. Maybe even the Centres have a bit of leeway in how they operate?

Yes, the private rescues do (although I didn't realise private rescues took on any animal brought in by an Inspector- is that in partnership with their RSPCA or something different?), I'm not saying they don't. However, a lot of Branches also run clinics and suchlike for those on benefits, which also cost a lot of money. Thankfully private rescues don't have to worry about that aspect and can focus on the animals in their care and on their lists and whose owners contact them. I can't imagine the pressure that would go on one person to do all that- hence the thankfully at the start of the sentence. The RSPCA committee shares the pressure unlike a private rescue.

I think whilst some people do have poor opinions, there are many who still have good opinions. The RSPCA are well publicised and so the name draws people in, I think, which can be beneficial to the animals in all respects.

Maybe this explains why RSPCA York is so ridiculously horrendous. I refuse to step foot in the place anymore.
Our first ever rescue was an ex-racing greyhound from York RSPCA... we were given no information on current feeding, no background as to how he was rescued, no info on behaviour etc. Needless to say, he attacked Phoebe who was only 1 at the time a week later, leaving her with a huge scratch down her face and almost a damaged eye.
When we took him back and explained the situation, they were not best pleased.
The atmosphere is terrible there, many of the volunteers are rude and horrible and I just can't face going there.
