Hay advice please.

My 2 are great hay eaters and at the moment they get hay from the local farm/pet shop and they love it. I get a huge bag for £8.

The only problem is I find it hard to get there as I dont drive and the shop doesn't deliver so I am looking for somewhere online that I could get my hay from instead just so I know I can always get it and will never have to worry about running out of it.

I need a hay that I can put in the litter tray and maybe a treat one too.
I am abit cluless when it comes to hay  There has only ever been one sort at the pet shop I use so I have no idea what's good and what's not.

So could you tell me what hay to use and where to get it from. I dont mind how much the hay costs as long as it's good.

Also is this a good one?

That's 3kg, roughly how long would that last me for 2 buns that eat alot! That would just go in a litter tray and stuffed into tubes/boxes.

3kg should last you around 2-3 weeks, depending how much they eat. If your rabbits are not that fussy, then I would go for meadow hay, as it's good quality hay, but it's also the cheapest out of all the hay types. If you want meadow hay, I'd personally go for this:

It's only £3.00 per 1.8kg bag, whereas the bunny nature meadow hay is £17.45 per 3kg. That's hugely expensive to me, just for meadow hay.

If you want something that is going to be better for their teeth, then timothy hay is the best hay type out there, but it is expensive.

This bag lasts my two rabbits 1 week, so it is expensive to feed this. However it is the best hay IMO.

Or you could get a sample pack to see what hay type your rabbits love best.

You can then let your rabbits decide what hay they want. :)

:wave:Hi, just wanted to share my experience. My 2 are outdoor buns and are rexes so I use alot more hay than some people because they have a very thick layer of megazorb then hay across the whole of the hutch.
I use pets at home compressed hay in their litter trays on top of the megazorb because it is very finely chopped and more like bedding to me - generally they don't eat it. I also use it as general bedding. They also get farm hay in their bedroom which they burrow about in, sit on and also eat - they love the big stalky bits.
Then I give them excel forage and/or herbage as well which is what they also like to eat.
Any waste that they don't eat ends up as bedding.
Neither of mine are very fussed on timothy hay so i stopped buying it as its not cheap. I do get through alot of hay but thats because they need it to keep their furry feet ok.
You have a vast choice out there! be careful not to sopend too mcuh - its addictive

Thank you so much for that informative reply :D
I think I will go for that meadow hay to put in their litter tray and then get the selection sample pack and find out which ones they like and then get 1 or 2 of the expensive hays as their 'treat' hay which they will get a plate of every day.
I never knew selcting hay could be so difficult!!

Thank you for your reply :D
I was looking at the Excel forage, I might get a bag of that to try too.

Just another question though.....I know rabbits tummies are sensitive so we have to change their diets gradually so as not to upset them, is this the same with hays?
I dont want to give my buns all these nice new hays to eat and make them ill.

I've always changed hay types very quickly and never had any ill effects from it. I get a new farm bale every 2-3 weeks so my rabbits are used to change of quality as each bale can be different. If you are worried, then just introduce a handful per day. I know with the sample pack, I just gave them a different bag each day.

Ah thank you I will just try them a little at a time just to be on the safe side as mine have had the same kind of hay ever since I got them.

Going to place an order on the hay experts site now.
