  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Inflamed tounge

Georgeypudding

I'm confussed, Sebastian has stopped eating so off we went to the vets, I was expecting it to be his teeth as I couldnt think of any other reason and he still seemed fairly alert.
When the vet looked in his mouth his teeth were fine but his tounge was inflamed, on top and underneath (not at the sides like I would expect it would be if his molars were the problem) :?
He's had a shot of pain killers, anti inflamitory and anti biotics and I have been sent home with some batril too (and recovery food)
My vet is open again on wednesday ( I do have some pain killers but I cant find the syringe  ) so I will probably be going back with him then/

Any ideas what might of caused this? :?

nope :? my previous vet did warn me that he may need a dental in the future (but they arent hugely savy) I forgot to mention that his temperature was 38c which the vet said was low, he was shaking a little in the vets but Im not sure if that was because he was breathing very fast (he doesnt like car journeys) theres a snuggle safe in the run incase he wants to sit on it

hmm :? I thought he may of bit his tounge but thats so random
He also scans (like his head moves side to side (if i was watching his eyes Id say they would be flicking) a little) when I am carrying him, is that normal :?

Is this a new thing ?
Scanning is a sign of poor eyesight, REW often do it. But actual flicking of the eyeballs (nystagmus) indicates a neurological/vestibular problem.

it is a new thing yeah, I dont know if he is acctually flicking his eye balls, I cant see but will get someone to watch. He does occasionally not see me and I spook him :?

Im not sure if it is ulcerated, just inflamed

Just been trying to syringe him some recovery food (never realised how difficult it is to do for buns with front teeth  ) I did some testing
When I move my hand towards his eyes he does not blink :? and when I pick him up and carry him it is his eyes that are flicking :?

Mine will eat recovery off a plate themselves.
Did you get metacam into him. He may start to eat himself if the pain is helped.

he had a shot of metacam at the vets  he wasnt acknowledging the bowls I put infront of him, I tried some soft pellets and some porridge with a tiny dap of honey in :(

My normal vet called me today so I went in to see him  Hes told me to give him metacam and metaclop that I already have here, Sebastian has already perked up a little scince having the metaclop and has just had more metacam. He's more lively and threw his crunchie at me
