  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Jasper is moulting! WHY?

Jasper lives outside with Tinkerbell and Mischief in the shed and it get's below freezing in there because the water bottles go rock solid. :( Anyway I fill their hutch (used as a base) with hay to keep them warm but that shouldn't cause Jasper to moult should it?!

I brought him inside for 2 mins to check his teeth and he was moulting when I stoked him. Being inside literally 2 mins can't cause him to moult right? Why is he moulting? It's freezing! :?

now, I have no idea how much of a possibility this is, but is it possible he's only just getting his winter coat?

My two girls fur has only thickened up in the last few days which absolutely baffled me.

Thanks maybe he's just late then... :? I hope he's not too cold. :( He does have 2 fat bunnies to snuggle up with though.

my bun belle is molting i put it down to growing a thicker coat as the weather gets colder they need a denser coat to keep them warm, im no expert by all means but i think this is a good explanation for it

Rabbits have a couple of big moults a year, but also several smaller ones in between. I expect the very sudden drop and extreme temperatures has just triggered another moult for an even thicker coat that is all.
