Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Re-Occuring Abscess

Hi All,

I post this on behalf of my sister in law who has a young rabbit who is suffering from re-occuring abscess. He is now on adut antibiotics I'm not sure which and information is limited but what shocked me was the fact that the vet said he may need to be PTS because of it!

Would this be right? Or should another vet be found. I've only had abcesses in the guinea pigs. which have all cleared up after being lanced, drained and then treated with antibiotics so I was unsure what to tell her.

All I could suggest was not giving up for now, until I had more information.

Thanks in advance. :)

My vet told me grim had to be PTS as his abscesses couldn't be treated. I said no.

They started treating him on antibiotics, but they were using baytril, the usual rabbit antibiotic. It didn't work. I did some research and went to see a new vet. She did some research and spoke to another vet in Scotland. She tried him on a stronger antibiotic, depocillin. He had to have injections every three days which I did myself at home after being taught how. After eight weeks the abscesses were gone. The abscesses that I was told by one vet were incurable. They were in his jaws in the bone of the incisor roots.

So, yes, find another vet. Find out what antibiotics are being given. Rabbit abscesses are very different to cats, dogs, people etc and can't be cured the same way. They are best removed with surgery and the infected tissue or bone cut away if possible too. Then strong antibiotics on top to clear whatever is left. Baytril won't do it. :(

Not all rabbits suffering from abscesses will be as lucky as my Grimlock, but please try these other options if you haven't already!

There are even more options not known to vets who don't specialise in rabbits. These include manuka honey and antibiotic beads.

Good luck.

Thanks guys! :) The abscess is in the neck area. I do hope he will be alright he is a Lionhead with harlequin markings an absolute doll of a rabbit, bless him.

Will pass the info on, thanks so much. :)
