Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

How cold can it get?

Just in anticipation of a cold cold winter, how cold can bunnies comfortably cope with outside?

They are sheltered in their hutches in the yard (which is fairly enclosed). They have 2 tarpaulins over them, about 2 layers of bubble-wrap on all sides and they have one of those silver padded covers.
They also have loads of hay and straw to burrow into and rearrange as they feel like (plus each other to snuggle up to).

Will that be enough or will I need to move them into the shed?

If you have a shed personally I would use it.
You could also provide them with a Snugglesafe heatpad.

Do keep a careful check on their water too as it will freeze very quickly.

I can vouch for this, as can Spenser! I changed it before I went to bed at midnight, but it was frozen solid when I got up at 6am. He won't drink from a bottle, which makes things trickier. He doesn't drink much, but all the same it is a worry.

I guess wild rabbits still have to feed in winter so they must be pretty good at coping with the cold. Plus aren't bunnies from cold places naturally anyway?

Need snow-hare genes....

Mine seem to be eating and drinking fine and they don't seem too bothered. They just hunker down in the hay and snuggle up with each other. No water freezing issues as of yet.

last year my heating broke and Pearl who i was so worried about with her poorly heart actually seemed to gain energy the colder it was .. got down to about 10 degrees which really scared me having buns who didnt have winter coats.
