  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Weight concerns

Yesterday I collected Barnaby from a rescue centre. He's around 3 years old and a lionhead lop.

What concerns me is that he feels very bony. I can feel his spine and hips. I weighed him this morning and he's 4lbs.

Pebbles is an 8 month old dwarf lop and weighs 5lbs. She had her myxi jab this month and the vet was very pleased with her weight and health.

Surely he should weigh a little bit more than 4lbs?

Already plan to do that :)

He had his myxi this month and I was also told that he'd have a health check before coming home. So that should be 2 vet checks within the month (note the should!)

Just back from my vet and Barnaby's had a reasonably clean bill of health.

She was also concerned about his weight, but his teeth, eyes, ears and tummy are looking / feeling good :thumb:

He weighed in at 4.4lbs, so not as low as I'd thought, unless he's put on 0.4lbs in 4.5 days!

Best thing was, she knew that I'll feed him correctly and that he should put on weight. If he hasn't after a month, then bloods may be needed.

So it would seem that he just didn't get enough to eat, which would explain why he's nomming everything in sight
