View Full Version : hypothermic bun - best thing to do?

I've just picked up the bun that's going to Alice's at Windwhistle this week from an AWFUL house. Took her straight to vet as she just didn't look right. Vet says she's hypothermic and malnourished (she's skeletal) and she has dribble all down her face and matted fur but the vet says her teeth look okay.

She's also scanning constantly and in a BIG way, but she's not REW, nor any shade of white. She's a grey harlequin. Is this normal?

Any tips on how to stabilise her?

Sh said no and that it would be a long process of just feeding her up. I think the reason she is hypothermic is because she's starving. Or they're both interlinked. I've got home and am syringe feeding her critical care and mashed up pellets and banana, but just wondered if there's anything I should do to raise her temp? But I know i shouldn't raise it too suddenly, should I?

The vet also said she thinks she might need a course of antibiotics, but as she's off to a rescue, it's better to just get her there and let her get over the upheaval and then sort her out.

Poor little thing

It sounds as if she needs to stay indoors, it's dropping to freezing outside at the moment so if she has no body fat she won't be able to cope - and if she's already hypothermic a night or two outdoors now could kill her. I would just feed her up gently and gradually; if she is low weight because she has not been fed then I would just give extra portions of normal food and not give any other 'fattening' foods because that will just upset her digestion.

Grey harlequin types often do have a red tint to the back of their eyes even if you can't normally see it - maybe there's some genetic link to poor eyesight there - I have known buns of that sort of colouring be big scanners too, so I wouldn't worry unduly about that at the moment.

Good luck x

So she's had no treatment at all :?

She will need to be indoors. If she's hypothermic already she wont survive outdoors

Is she eating/drinking/pooing ?

Did the Vet check her ears and her eyesight ?

Did the Vet check for signs of dehydration ?

Vet checked for dehydration, said she was hydrated, she's taking a lot of the syringe feeds and loves the food so is obviously just really hungry. I haven't seen a poo yet.

She's indoors in a carrier at the moment as I don't think she's used to more space than this.

I'm surprised the vet hasn't taken her in, but even more surprised that she hasn't told me what to do with her as she's hypothermic. She said her temperature was 97.

She checked, ears and eyes - eyes are red - I assume she checked her eyesight with the eye exam.

I do trust my vet and I think my vet trusts me, but I am surprised they said I could take her home.

The woman I got her from said she had, had a litter 2 weeks ago of 2 rabbits, but one died and her son picked the other up by the back leg and snapped it :cry::cry:

No disrespect intended to your Vet but I'd be seeking a second opinion ASAP.
I would be VERY reluctant for her to travel any distance.

I had a very hypothermic guinea pig but he was so bad he couldn't move and was almost unconcious :( I managed to revive him by bringing him indoors and letting him adjust for about 15 minutes then I wrapped him in a towel and rubbed him gently to stimulate his circulation. I did this every few minutes until he was a bit warmer then put him in a box wrapped in the towel with a heatpad next to him, but not directly under him. Once he was fully concious I syringed him with warm rehydration fluid, I used dioralyte but avipro has electrolytes in it too so could be used instead. He was so much better by the time he got to the vet that they didn't believe me when I told them how bad he had been  I'm glad to say he made a full recovery though :) Getting plenty of fibre in them if they will eat can help too because fibre produces lots of heat when fermented by bacteria in the gut.

From what you have said though I would be worried about other possible problems with this bunny too :(

I agree with Jane. IMO she should have been admitted and put on a heat blanket or wrapped in veterinary heat wraps and given fluids sub-cut or IV to get her fluids and sugars up. If she's back with you now I would have her in a warm room on a heat pad and wrapped up in blankets or held for body warmth. Keep her eating and her fluids up too - whatever the vet says, a hypothermic bun is normally a bun where their digestion has ground to a halt and as a result they become internally dehydrated (in the guts) even if peripherally they seem normal.

Well Liz and jacks Jane and other specialists will know better than I do - but from experience I have that is not 'normal' scanning but something neurological - perhaps related to the hypothermia????? or the starvation???

Re getting her warm again - warmed subcut fluids and holding her against you are the best things (that is how you warm people - holding them with you skin to skin) but if there is a problem with that (poss mites etc) then wrap her in vetbed or anything else fluffy and warm and place somwhere gently warming - NOT hot.

Is there anything else I can check for before the vet comes round? I've checked her all over for flystrike, she's done some poos and they look okay. She's taking her syringe feeds, she's on a heatpad and (hopefully) gradually warming up...Her eyes are red and sore and she has a spot (like a stye) on one of them.

Theo or Liz I'd be grateful if either of you could take a look at her. I think she will need proper testing somewhere.

At worst there is something wrong with her and that's why she's got those neurological signs and sore eyes and best case scenario she's just been so starved in the cold that it's caused parts of her body to slow down that are gradually warming up now.

Let me see what the vet says tonight. She's brightening up each minute, which is good. The difference to when I first got her is already quite big.

It's great that she's eating both syringe and voluntarily. There is nothing like food in the tummy to bring body temperature back up to normal. Buns are a bit like horses reliant on food metabolism to manufacture body heat so this is great that she's eating, very positive from the hypothermia point of view. No idea about the rest other than if it is a neurological nystagmus then I suppose active EC or a middle ear infection/cranial abcesses are a possibility :? But this is way beyond me. Good luck and well done for everything you have done and are doing for her. x

The awful thing is, she actually felt terribly guilty... like really, really guilty. I just wish that if she had felt like that before she would have done something sooner instead of set her free. When I got my guinea pig Jack he wasn't putting on weight properly when he was growing so my vet recommended I syringe-feed him some Critical Care. As it turned out I didn't need to as he'll happily take it from a bowl or a syringe without the need for force-feeding! Maybe this little girl would take some CC from a bowl on her own? Well Catwalk Kate ( or Kate for short ) is doing very well this morning, she is eating for England, pooping like a trooper and looking quite bright in herself, she is not swaying, she is paifully thin and literally all bones so I think the swaying was something to do with the cold, she is much warmer and much brighter.

Well done Kate for getting her to safety, I don't think she would have lasted much longer outside and the tempretures are dropping so low at night now, lets have some vibes for this little girl that she gets over the traumas that she has endured and puts on lots of weight

Theo and I were saying last night, it's so sad because there are probably thousands of others out there like this and my heart bleeds for them. Even my vet said last night "Where there's one there will be more. Rabbits really are the most persecuted pet."

Oh you two angels! Well done, you must both be exhausted now. This is where I am totally useless, if I don't get lots of sleep I expire, you really have been able to look after her incredibly well, travelling the country and sitting up with her all night.

Now, you both get some rest:no: or you will have me to answer to! And, I am so, so frightening:lol:

Keep going little Kate, you are safe now.

Oh dear, thought is was too good to be true, I have just got her out of her tris and put her on the landing to have a run around and she can't hop, she can only walk, she is scared of the space and is not quite sure of what's happening, I would assume that she has been shut away in a tiny hutch and not let out for excercise :cry::cry:, she is very nervous and when I tried to stroke her she cowered like she was going to be hit :shock:

I think this little girlie is going to take some time to build her confidence

Awwww poor little girlie

I wonder if she does actually have poor eyesight :? That may account for her odd 'scanning' type behavior and also her reluctance to move/fear of space/head-shyness.

Just been watching her and I think that's the problem, she ws laying all chilled out and when I approached her she wasn't quite sure and jumped up, she then started to scan slightly, she seemed more relaxed when I spoke to her.

When I went to pick her up she was on the floor surrounded by three of the owner's young sons who were firing pellet guns at her and their shoes were barely missing the top of her head. I bet she's been dropped, shot at and badly handled. When I put her in the carrier they were aiming the pellet guns through the gaps and I had to really pull myself back from throttling them.

That sounds very much like a poor sight problem then. Hopefully once she familiarises herself with her new environment she will gain more confidence.

I am sure she is already feeling much better now she is warm and has had some decent food.

Hi Lorraine, as for giving the garden a once over, that's a really good idea, but I just don't think she'll allow me to go back to the house. She hasn't replied to my phone message and email asking for details about the now-owner of this boy bunny.

I got the impression that there were no other rabbits there - she was feeling so guilty about it all that if there had been other buns there, she would have handed them over too.

I've also just found her on gumtree

I feel such an idiot. I felt really sorry for her and genuinely believed that she knew nothing about rabbits and that she was overun with her kids who had special needs. I just throught she'd got into a tricky situation. But both those ads are hers and in them she knows all about what breeds they are, what they supposedly "need" to be healthy.

She is basically a breeder who treats her rabbits appallingly. One of the hutches on that baby page hasn't got anything IN it. It's just wood they are sitting on.

Lovely photo Theo. Kate, dont give yourself a hard time as this bunny has been rescued.

These bunnies were being given away and not sold on Gumtree. It does sound as if got out of her depth. Whether she intended to breed and then couldn't sell them, they were finally being given away.

I would offer to take the hutches off her hands too, now that she has "given" up. You could say that they can go to a rescue and we can break up and dispose. If she sells these things, some poor bunny will end up in an unsuitable hutch.

And, remember Ripple (the chocolate rex). She has gone to a wonderful house home. And, didn't you bring mum neddy and baby neddies? Last two booked, all wonderful loving homes.

You are making a difference.

The last ads were free to a good home and not for sale. It might be that she started off, like a lot of muppets, thinking its easy money. Then finding out she couldnt sell.

If you dont hear back from her by next week, give me her address and Ill drop her a line and ask for the hutches for "my" rescue.
