The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Chewing skin after being vacinnated?

Hi.

I took my bun to have his VHD vacine done last night and he was fine. Then I got up this morning and he's chewed off the fur on the back of his neck and his skin is all bloody. I've called the vets, but as it's a Saturday it's emergencies only. I left a message on the answerphone asking someone to call me back.

I think Oscar's okay apart from that, he ate his breakfast as normal but he's defintely not as energetic as usual. He's not chewing anymore that I can see, just laying there.

It's probably completely normal but I'm freaking out a bit. Can I clean the wound up myself with anything? Any idea how I can stop him chewing/licking it?

Thanks a lot for reading

x

Was it Cylap?.

Bunnies can have a nasty reaction to the vaccine on their skin (IMO I would consider that the vet didn't do the injection very well)

Keep an eye on it as it can start to look like a burn.

He may need some antibiotics in case of infection.

Yes, I've just checked and it says Cylap in his book. His skin looks awful, it's all inflamed and still bloody. I'm going to call the vets again..

Thank you for replying. :)

Hiya,

My bun Bella had a reaction also.. but not as severe as what your sounds.

We took her back to the vets and they have given her antibiotics and a wash for the wounds which has to be done twice a day.
Definitely worth getting back in contact with the vets if you can so that the can confirm what they think you should do. :)

All the best.
I hope he gets better soon. :)

I've got him in with the vets at in half an hour, will ask about metacam.

He's eating well enough, just keeps trying to lick and scratch the back of his neck and is really out of it. Really worried!

He's back from the vets and has been prescribed Fuciderm Gel which we need to apply twice a day. The vet said to keep an eye on him and bring him back if it doesn't get better or gets any worse.

Thanks for all the advice. :)
