Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Poo!

Indy

Warren Scout
Pie is around 9 weeks old and her poos are tiny and quite dark (although she is the better hay eater of the two.)

Ind's are much bigger and usually lighter too but he tends to eat less hay than her (although they've both started munching on some straw)

Are her poos so much smaller because she's younger, do you think? Ive weighed her today and shes only 490g so could it just be because shes small?

Are they indoors or outdoors?

Zero used to have lots of poo issues and one of the many reasons was because he was eating the straw. It can make them colicky and can discourage them from eating hay, so I stopped using hay, but mine are house bunnies.

What pellets do they get?

She has Excel Jr/Dwarf and bundles of as much hay and readigrass as she can stuff her little face with. Theyre outdoor buns and she had her first time in a run today so has had a little grass too.

Shes still very bony so been topping up her hay quite often and mixing readigrass through both of theirs to try and get them to eat more.

I found readigrass makes my bunnies' poos go black  so this could account for the dark.

Sounds like you're introducing grass slowly which is good

Some rabbits do fine on Excel but mine have been better since changing to Science Selective pellets

There are probably just a lot of changes for her to get used to right now so I wouldn't worry just yet :) sounds like you're doing everything right :D

Just cleaned them out (she is a POO MACHINE, i swear ive never known such a messy creature!!) and now that shes on an Excel/SS mix her poos seem to be much lighter :D

Is it the fibre that contributes to the colour of the poo? Just wondering as she was on crappy Chinchilla pellets before which were about 12-13% fibre i think. Though she didnt eat much of them?
