a waterproof bag or really cheap large box that I can store a farm bale of hay in? It has to be cheap as I am supposed to be saving up and I am paying £2-3 for a tiny bag of hay.

oops sorry no I missed the waterproof part. I need to read better on here before posting willy-nilly.

Cheap plastic boxes are hard to come by, try a car boot sale. the cheapest I've found is for a 110 litre box that costs £12. Not cheap to me really :/ I need some myself

Is it for a whole bale? I have one of these - ok so it's a bit more to pay but it's a once off thing. The hay can breathe in it as there is enough space for air to circulate once you start using it.

The only thing is I have no idea how waterproof it is as we keep ours in the garage. It is the ideal size for a bale though.

There is also this one for the same price but slightly shorter.

Or there's this which is quite a good price but only a fraction of the size.

I like the idea of the box from homebase.... we just bought our first bale and need somewhere to store it, its just a case of trying to work out the best place etc

Mine is stored in the shed in an old duvet cover. Does it have to go outside? Do you have anywhere sheltered to put it?

The only thing i can think of is something my friend uses at the farm. She has a "hay bag" but i dont know how waterproof it is. Ill see if i can find a link from a horsey site...

Hmmm im not sure its waterproof :S

But its like this...

maybe you could use something like this and they put some tarp over it?

This could be the same thing, but it says its waterproof?

i have one i got from a tesco's extra for around £25 last year not sure if it was on offer or if they do them that price normally?! its a plastic tub with lid (have to assembly yourself but i even managed it except the wheels i still have no idea how i was meant to fit them on?!!! x

for people storing them in duvet covers what do you do about mice? having never had a bale before.... what do the mice do, eat it or leave other lovely 'presents'?! we definitely have some mice around ours, we had a house mouse for a while - called him George.... never found where he went, thought we had him trapped and went to buy a human trap but when we got back he was gone!

I dont really want to bend down all the time to pick bits off either, would rather it was at arm level.

Of course we would have far more room if it wasnt for the 3 lawnmowers that the hubby insists we need...... !

That's why we got the box cos we stored our first one in a duvet cover and the bottom got wet despite being in the garage and we found a big hole in it presumably from a mouse or worse.

I do like the box.... just need to 'lose' the 3 lawnmowers!

Do you think you could keep it in these? would obviously need more than one but you could hang it high off the wall..... keep it out of the way of our friendly 'George the Mouse' and I might not have to bend down all the time (have a slightly bad back but also suffering from dizziness at the moment so upright is preferred!)

EDIT - changed for one thats definitely made of cotton

Depends on how big they are. From looks it looks to me like you might get one 'slice' (the bales kinda have these slices built in to them) in there but our bales have about 20 of these 'slices' so you'd need quite a few. Also every time you get a bale you'd have to break it up to store it.

I find that most of the time I don't have to bend too far until I start getting low on hay. I only ever go out there about two or three times a week - change boxes with hay straight from the box and then fill up two Rhinotubs for the weeks extra topups. I get about one 'slice' per tub and this lasts us about a week.
