  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

My Dwarf Lop Rabbit, has just been neauterd today, and one of his eyes is shut and wont open :( Why X

Sometimes if a rabbit is under general anaesthetic for a while the eyelid can stick to the eyeball - this is normally solved by the vets applying the appropriate medicated lubricant. It is a problem because eyes can sometimes ulcerate in some cases. Were the eyes wet around the outside when you brought bunny home? Normally a rabbit that has had to have the salve applied with have slightly gunky eyes.

Is your bunny a boy or girl? Girls will have to be under GA longer and are possibly more likely to have an issue with eyes.

In any event if you are concerned you must call your vet for advice (even if after hours).

Maybe the Vet/VN did not put any Lacrilube into his eyes to protect them from dust etc during the GA. Whilst unconscious Bun wont blink, so any airbourne particles are a potential irritant.

If you gently bathe his eye with cooled boiled water it will hopefully open. If there is any sign of a pusy discharge and/or inflammation he will need some antibiotic eye drops/ointment.
