Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Choking Fits

Aurie

Young Bun
I had a rabbit a while back who used to have choking fits. The vet said she had a cleft palate and we had some medicine to give her when she started to choke.

She used to have one every several months but after a few years the choking fits got more frequent and in the final week of her life she was choking every day. She died during some of her choking episodes, I assume because her heart couldn't take it anymore.

I just felt like having a look on the internet to see other people experiences with this but the only things I can find about choking are rabbits choking on pellets.

Anyone have any experience with a rabbit who has choking fits that aren't related to choking on food?

I'm unsure, but seem to recall we did have a bunny on here called Scamp (owned by Becky86) who had choking episodes. It might be worth searching for his thread. Although, I imagine there are many reasons a rabbit could have repeated choking episodes. I have a bunny who has larygeal issues and sometimes struggles with food and drink and coughs sometimes when eating. He is currently being maintained though.

Cheers, i'll take a look.

Poor thing :( Mine just used to start choking and frothing at the mouth randomly, when she was no where near any food.

Thank you. That's so sad to read :( Doesn't sound like my bunny though, she was completely healthy except for the choking fits. That poor bunny sounds like it has a lot of problems, feel so sorry for the owner :(

How do you know if a bunny is choking?

I have a bunny with respitory problems and suspected laryngeal issues and eating always sets him off. Last night he had what I though was a sneezing fit for a good 5 mins straight, quite violent and scary. Could he of been chocking instead?

Well, she was struggling to breathe and frothing at the mouth a lot and making little coughing noises.

I have a rabbit with Snuffles and when she used to have bad sneezing fits, she basically just sneezed like a person would if they were to have a sneezing fit.

If bun is choking and it's not related to food, I would be wondering about a mass in the chest/thoracic cavity. :? or perhaps a problem with neuro control of swallowing.
