  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Spaying and staying away from home - how resilient are bunnies?

I'm heading back to my parents for a couple of weeks over Christmas and my mum has very kindly invited Hilary along too. She's been allocated an indoor room and my mum has already dug out our dog's giant crate and pen for her to stay in if required.

We have a brilliant vet near my parent's house so I was debating getting Hils spayed when we're there as she'll be just over 6 months then and I trust the vets in Essex more than taking a chance on some of the shifty looking vets in London.

Obviously I'm a bit concerned about moving her away from home and adding to potential distress with surgery but on the flipside I won't need to move her for sometime afterwards (even after i've come back to London if necessary - parents are very competent with animals) and I'm more confident in the quality of veterinary care she'll get near my parents. Do you reckon she'll be ok to have surgery/recuperate away from her 'territory'?

i would do it at your mums PROVIDED the vets are rabbit savvy. take a heat pad with you and towels and blankets as they cant lie on hay or woodchips/straw while recovering. xx

It depends on how well she adapts to the new home. Some rabbits wouldn't be bothered by the move at all. Mine would probably be terrified for days and I wouldn't even consider an operation.
