Hurley had a horrible abscess from his mouth and the pus had filled a huge area around his mouth and chin. He went in for x-rays and pus removal and is now on metacam for any pain and antibiotics to clear up any remaining ickyness. He still needs to see a specialist in order to find out exactly what created the abscess and how best to go about treating it, but from the initial x-rays it appears all his back teeth are overgrown and have pushed their roots down too far, causing the abscess. This would be difficult to "cure" because you can't remove all a guinea pig's back teeth! Well you can, but he'd have to be syringe-fed several times a day for the rest of his life and that's no quality of life as far as I (and the vet) am concerned. It looks like they may be able to file down his back teeth with an operation, which may help, but we're not sure exactly as we haven't yet seen the specialist.
In the meantime, he continues to eat, drink and squeak when he hears the vegetable crisper, although he seems a little more inclined to spend most of his time chilling out (but he IS 5 years old!). He ate hay right up until the first op to remove the pus and ate more hay only ten minutes after waking up! He's such a brave little boy so I wanted to share his story fully and say how proud I am of him!
Here he is right before his op:
