Baby bunnies

New Kit
Hi everyone, I really desperately need some advice. About 5 months ago we brought 2 "female" rabbits from our local pet shop. You can probably guess where this is going!
We were due to have them spayed in acouple of weeks, the one rabbit has been behaving aggressively towards us and I was told that is normal and that spaying would help withthis.

today I had to the one female out because " she" was constantly on the back of the other, this was something else I was told was quite normal even in female rabbbits. As i was removing her Inoticed a little pink thing wriggling under all her fur and hay and lo and behold we have 5 little baby rabbits.
I have removed what I am assuming is the male rabbit. but a couple of things, I hope I am right in assuming that the rabbit which has been collecting the fur and making a nest is the female one?
also what do i do now, should i leave her completley alone, give her extrafood and leave the rest to nature. I am so cross at the shop, but even more angry at myself for not checking independently about the sex of the rabbits. so please any advice at all

Hi, it sounds as if you have removed the correct bunny. Mother rabbits will only feed their babies once or twice a day for just a few minutes each time. She will need extra food in the form of lots of hay, green food (if she is used to having it) and extra dry feed as well.

As the weather is now turning colder make sure that you provide lots of extra bedding and consider covering the hutch up at night, check the babies are covered up several times a day otherwise they will chill very quickly. If she trusts you she should let you do this, you should rub your hands in the dirty corner of her hutch so that she does not smell you on the babies. They will open their eyes at around 10-12 days and leave the nest at about 3 weeks old, this is when they will start to eat solid food.

They should stay with mum until they are eight weeks old, although if the father was in with her when she gave birth it is very likely that she is already pregnant again I'm afraid, so expect another litter around 30-32 days after the first ones were born, if she is pregnant you may well have to take the first litter away from her as she is likely to attack them once she nears the time she is due to give birth again.

Good luck!

thanks :) they are house rabbits, so warmth should not be a problem. I am really happy to know that she may already be pregnant!! although I am quite sure we took the male rabbit out not long after, but of course it doesnt take long does it!
