Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Dental time again? UD: Vet on holiday! :( U/D: 1/11/10. End of the world.

Alpha Buck
Peter has gone 6 weeks and 1 day since his last dental. When I took him for his VHD jab yesterday the vet checked his mouth and said he has a spur starting to grow towards his tongue again. However, yesterday he wasn't bothered by this and was eating and behaving normally. He also had no sores or ulcers in his mouth.

TODAY has been a different story. This morning he ate his food slower than usual and this evening he didn't dive into his bowl of food or push the girls out of the way to get to the veg. He slowly nibbled a carrot after I had closed the cage up.

I will ring my vet group in the morning (my vet belongs to a group of three and one of them - not mine, is open tomorrow) to book a dental for Monday morning. I know that it is a dental that he needs and my vet has said that as soon as I think he needs a dental, ring up and book it.

I am worried that he will be in pain so was wondering whether I should give him some painkiller? I have the stuff left over from his last dental and know that it is based on his weight. Should I give it to him or wait to speak to the vet and give him some in the morning if the vet agrees??

Thanks

Tanya

Could having the VHD jab yesterday be causing him to go off his food a bit? I'm sure someone more knowledgable than me will be along soon!

It could, but when he had it last year (VHD) he had no side effect. Also, it has been just over 6 weeks since his last dental and prior to the last dental, he only lasted three weeks before he needed another.

Ah, OK, probably is the teeth then. If it was one of mine and I thought they were in pain, I would give them something for it tonight rather than wait until tomorrow. xx

If your Vet has given you Metacam for him and you think he may have mouth pain then I would give him a dose as previously prescribed by your Vet :)

I have given Peter pain relief this morning and he still isn't eating. I am going to give him a little longer to see if the pain killers help, then will start syringe feeding him.

I have rang the vet and have a BIG problem. Peters vet, the BEST vet ever, is on holiday tomorrow. :(

The other vet is working but he doesn't have a clue about what has been going on with Peter. Peter's vet rang the specialists and had worked with him alot.

Peter's vet is back on Tuesday, but I think that is too long to make Peter wait. However, I know that Peter's vet is the best. I am so worried because before Sam, Peter's current vet, he had three dentals in the space of six week - with three different vets. Sam (the vet) did Peters dental 6 WEEKS ago. She is great BUT I don't want my baby to suffer any longer than he needs to.

I have booked Peter in for tomorrow but am really worried because his usual vet won't be there. :( I am seriously considering cancelling it and waiting until Tuesday, but I think that would be cruel. :?:?:?

Please help.

Another update!! :(

Peter has been in the conservatory all day and has not shown any interest in food. He did eat a few yoghurt drops though. :? I have managed to get about 20ml of critical care and organic baby food into him.

About an hour ago I put him back out with the girls. Although he looks sad and is slumped down, the girls keep washing him and snuggling up to him. :)

I am worried that I can't monitor his poop outside, so will bring him back in soon.

He hasn't produced any hard poops today but I caught him eating the sticky ones a few times and I had to wipe some from his bottom.

I am REALLY worried about the other vet doing his dental but as he is so bad I feel I have no choice. :(

Oh no, that's an awful decision to have to make. I think I'd have to go with whoever could do it soonest. Have you seen the vet that's in tomorrow before? xx

The vet that is in tomorrow did a routine dental on one of my other rabbits about 6 weeks ago! However, she did not have any of the complications like Peter and did not need her teeth filed down to the gum line.

Hi Tanya

That's a horrible situation to be in and it's happened to me too. But if Peter isn't eating I think I would be inclined to have the dental tomorrow while he's still relatively healthy, otherwise gut stasis is a risk.

My rabbit Jess suffers with her teeth and it's a nightmare. : (

Keeping my fingers crossed that all goes well with Peter.

My baby boy has gone and I can't stop crying.

I rang the vets at 1pm today and was told that he was recovering and to pick him up at 4:30pm this evening. I had a missed call from the vet at 3:30pm. I rang back and they said he had just died. :( Apparently they didn't start the op until 2:45pm. :? They say that the dental went well, he came around then died. I really don't understand. I just want to kill the vet. He has taken my baby from me. :(

We buried him in the garden next to his big run. Everything is so final. I want him back.

Oh sweetie I'm so saddened for you, you must be absolutely devastated to lose your beautiful baby in this way :( Big, big hugs to you xxx
