  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Young Bun
My french lop gets a big dog bowl of water daily and its always completely dry in the morning. Shes inside just now and she drank a human bowl of water within a few hours and nearly finished her second bowl. Is that normal or is she just really thirsty and im just worrying?

Is she an indoor bun? i noticed mine drink more because the heating is on and they get dry, iv'e turned the rad down in the kitchen now so they dont get overheated.
maybe a trip to the vet to check bun is ok would put your mind at rest? xx

Is this a new thing for her? I.e. is she drinking more than normal?

Some buns drink more water because they live in a warmer environment and have a drier diet. Does she have a lot of pelleted feed and not much greens/veg/grass?

Is she peeing excessively? or more than usual?

I had to take Lulu to the vets last month as she was drinking loads (which was unusual) and as a result she was peeing loads. Her wee also smelt very strong (of ammonia) and more worryingly she had begun to lose weight. Antibiotics had failed so we knew it probably wasnt a kidney infection. However, after blood tests and xray it has come back that she has a bit of kidney disease, its so mild though that just a change in her diet has made her into a different bunny.

She has Timothy hay now and also, the vet gave me a list of safe veg to help her. By this I mean veg that is low in calcium apparently calcium stones were building in her kidneys. Unfortunately for her it means no more beloved kale for breakfast but the vast improvement in her health makes the sacrifice worthwhile.
