Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Bloated bunny

Alpha Buck
Last night Lewis was really bloated and not moving about much, but this morning he was fine! He's not bloated now, but doesn't seem too active (although, he runs to me if he thinks i've got a treat lol), he had a minor case of GI a couple of weeks ago (after his neuter). I haven't been feeding him anything different, so I don't know why he would bloat, also... he's still eating/drinking and passing droppings! :/ Any suggestions please? :)

Also, he knows there's another rabbit in the room next to here (open plan downstairs), could this upset him/cause him to act sulky?

Bloat is closely linked to gut motility. If Lewis had GI stasis or ileus a couple of weeks ago it is entirely possible it has not yet resolved fully, it can be very persistent and I have many times witnessed its return within several weeks. Gas pockets can resolve by themselves, which may have been what happened last night. I would keep a close eye on him and if his droppings slow down or get smaller or he appears bloated again/loud bowel sounds then I would pop him to the vet for a thorough check over and possibly some gut motility meds to get everything back up to speed - and of course to check for any underlying causes.

Strange bunnies in close proximity can cause stress levels to increase but I would think it far more likely to be related to his episode a few weeks back.
