  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Never ending GI issues...

My bunny Princess has been in and out of stasis for about 2 years now. She is currently on reglan, cisapride, metacam and gas-x for GI issues. Her vet cannot figure out why she keeps going into stasis. We have done many many tests but it seems as though we are just chasing the wind. She is also on enalapril and lasix for heart issues. My goal is to figure out why Princess keeps going into stasis and to be able to discontinue her motility meds eventually. I don't like that she has to be on them long term. It seems as though we are just treating the symptoms. I just wish we could find the cause(s). She is at the vet right now and has been there for about 2 full weeks. We are testing a theory of it possibly being environmental. She's doing well there (while on all those motility meds) and I'm bringing her home Tuesday to see if she goes back into stasis. The vet says it could be her teeth, heart, environmental, stress, or basically anything under the sun causing these GI problems. I'm open to any advice to share with my vet. I just want what's best for Princess and do not think it's fair that she's at the vet all the time due to stasis or to be on all those meds as long as she has been. Feel free to respond...

 Hi & welcome to RU. You don't half give us a difficult one!
May I ask a few questions?
Which country are you in? Those aren't the usual gut motility agents used in the UK.
How old is Princess?
Is she a house bunny?
What is her basic diet?
Which started 1st. her gut issues or her heart issues?
What tests has your vet done?

What investigations have been done so far?

How old is she? Has she been spayed?

Has an exotic referral been made?
