Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Xeno 450

Hiya.... not been around for ages.... and now I have a question...

Nushka has been prescribed XENO 450 for mites. I have just been reading up on it before I give it to her as I've never used a spot on before. I saw a post on here back in Jan where it was questioned.

I have checked the dose presribed, 2 pippettes for between 1.5 and 3kg so that is correct. However she is bonded, are there any contraindications for this? Will it harm Bungle if he licks it off?

I'm tempted to go back and ask for the injection..... thoughts please

Thanks

I've used Xeno 450 a with a few bunnies, but not in recent years.

I would suggest treating both with it, and then separating them until the treatment has dried (I believe this is what it says, from memory). Then put them back together. If you keep them next to each other you shouldn't have much of a problem, but a car journey might help if they won't go back together.

I currently have some bunnies having the Ivermectin injections and its been super easy and they haven't had any side effects either. They go back every 10 days and its very cost effective, I've found.

They do the same thing, but sometimes the spot on can be more effective than the injection, and vice versa, so really it comes down to personal choice, I think.

Yeah it's perfectly safe :).

If in any doubt, separate them for half an hour or so until it's dried.

Personally I'd probably treat both rabbits anyway.

Thanks, Bungle is completely clear. Nush has 'crispy' edges to her ears.... not actually convinced its mites but will try the XENO if its safe.

Separating is virtually impossible with these two.... they stick together like Velcro.... and I really don't trust Nush if I separate them.... she is a loon. I guess I can sit with them for half hour or so and make sure no grooming.

Thanks

Yeah, you deffo have to treat them both. Just try to separate the hair and get it right on the skin as much as possible, do it in small blobs all down the back of the neck and it should dry in pretty quickly.

My little rabbit was treated with Xeno 450 and had bloat 24 hours later. Not sure if it was the treatment or not, but just keep a close eye on them.

I prevented mine from grooming themselves or each other for about an hour after application (you need to put it on several different locations as per the instructions, not just on one spot) but Marie Kubiak recently commented on a Xeno450 thread on here not too long ago to confirm that it is safe if ingested and is infact designed to be ingested by most species.

If you're just treating her keep them separate for about half an hour to an hour. My vet said it shouldn't harm them to lick it off, but then it won't be a full treatment so it may not work. :)
