Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Infected Toungue

hi new to this form. after 7 brilliant years with my house bunny he unfortunately died yesterday when at the vets.

he had been drooling for the last two days and vet thought he had a jaggy tooth so he was sedated in order to file it. when asleep the vet found his toungue and throat to be infected! his heart just slowed down and he died. he said this might be related to his kidneys, he has lost 3lb in the last 5 months which vet said was a lot for a rabbit.

We went to see him one last time and got to see his toungue. it was almost raw looking and the vet said it may have been like this for some time but we wld have never have noticed.

Does anyone know what this cld have been. Thought id sent him to get teeth filed and he never came back. feel guilty. The night before his operation he didnt drink anythin where as he used to drink a small bowl a day

I'm very sorry you lost your bunny.

Potentially dental problems can cause lacerations to the tongue and obviously infections can result from that, which may also cause the weightloss because they can not eat.

However, as your vet has already mentioned, so you already know, there are many other possible reasons that this could happen.

Its probably best to not focus on the what ifs and maybes because none of us can answer those. Your vet has the best idea having examined your bunny. All you can do now is focus on grieving for your lost friend.

I guess it will be the same for rabbits, but many animals with kidney disease can end up with tongue ulceration due to high urea levels in the blood.
Sorry for your loss.
