Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. swelling around willy and bottom area

hi, if its not enough what i've been through with other bunnies, Dumbledore a rescue bunny has a swollen, redness around willy and bottom area. It's like all the mucosa area isaffected. Had cream from vet last week who thought a bite initially but usual vet saw yesterday and she has never seen anything like this before. Has anyone advice on what this could be?? she gave me ear drops that are antifungal i think to use and review Friday.

no he not vaccinated yet as he had ear mites then was neutered now this, vet waiting til he healthy. how do i know if a rabbit specialist???

This sounds very much like the start of myxomatosis and I would ask your vet why they have not mentioned this.

A rabbit specialist will usually have 'exotics specialist' as part of their description on the vets surgery advertising etc. Rabbits come under the heading of 'exotics'.

Did your vet not suggest at any time that the rabbit should be vaccinated against myxomatosis twice a year and VHD once a year?

I am afraid I have to agree that it sounds like Myxo if your bunny is not vaccinated. I would be questioning why your vet hasn't had this as the first thought if the rabbit isn't vaccinated.

I'd get to a rabbit savvy vet asap to make sure. Hopefully it won't be the dreaded Myxo.

As well as bearing in mind it could be myxo, I'd also be aware of the possibility fo rabbit syphilis which can lie dormant in a bunny until their immune system is stressed.

all other bunnies vaccinated but she was waiting til he healthy - when we got him he hadn't been vaccinated but he had ear mites, then she wanted to neuter him and then he came down with this. He was seen by different vet last week at same practice but myxi not mentioned either. Can't bear the thought of another one being ill. She did say she would take tissue samples if eardrops didn't work - she gave them because they were antifungal i think. She did wonder about immune system being compromised. will see if i can find pictures of rabbit syphilus online to compare.

Is he still on the ear drops? Was the mite problem not fully resolved before he was neutered or has it come back? If thats the case I'd agree with sky that there could be alternatives in this instance as it seems like an awful lot is going on here and the immune system sounds compromised.

Just read up on rabbit syphilis - it does sound like this is more likely especialy as he had a sore on his nose which has healed by itself - we thought he had been nipped through the run by one of the other bunnies. Just called vet she will be in tomorrow morning, i have left a message. His ear mites had completely cleared the ear drops are for his genital area!! Will keep you updated. This is now the second week and he is peeing, pooing, eating and drinking all as normal with absolutely no signs of illness.

Hang on, ear drops for his genitals? :? ? did i read that right?

Also, he had a sore on his nose? Did it scab up at all?

Eating and drinking is good, but this is sounding too similar to parsnipbuns thread :( which is myxi.

I so hope it isn't, for you and your bunnies sake. :(
