Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

bad leg/ legs spinal? any ideas/update at vets

hi there, as you know iv had bunnys for many years all are vaccinated and all (4) are neutered. dora is a chinchilla coloured nethie cross she is 5.5yrs old several months ago she started limping while she was staying at mums (we were away for a weekend) mum took her to the vets (very rabbit savvy vet) who took x rays (thinking athritus) which came back as normal then after feeling a lot found her illo-sacral ligament sorry if iv spelt that wrong was damaged on the left side this seemed at the time to make sense she seemed not in pain but was having problems walking and jumping although hopping along or running caused no issues to her(when using both legs) any way she was put on cage rest for 12 weeks ( this meant confining her originally to a hutch then gradually allowing her space on a flat level on soft flooring indoors, she initially got a bit better then seemeed to make herself worse by stomping all the time on the bad leg and moving the soft flooring eventually we felt keeping her in a smaller space wasnt doing her and good and she didnt seem any better or worse and has good and bad days and wasnt in pain so we let her back out in the garden and hutch,
any way this last week iv been away on honeymoon and mum agian had her and noticed her right leg had gotten bad also seemingly twisted, any way she made a vet appointment for her with the specialist rabbit vet for the next day and then had to cancel it as dora was well again and hopping as before.....since iv returned iv also noticed she is lower to ground than normal at the rear and is weeing (not every day but sometimes) on her one leg which i then bathe, she has been overdue on her vhd injection as we were advised not to give a rabbit who was unwell and with ligament/muscular issues the vaccine.. i have just made an appointment to see my vets(not as good as mums) about her legs as she seems to have good and bad days and now both legs or her rear end seems affected sorry to go on so long any ideas? iv thought possibly ec but then by now untreated i would have expected more problems and head tilt, iv thought trapped nerve or tumour then realised tumours would show up on x rays, so any ideas? and why some days is it ok and others not ok ..its def not athritus as x rays were clear. she is eating weeing pooping and happy in all other ways x

her spine looks fine to the untrained eye the only noticable thing is her rear end sits lower than it used to

Im just wondering about some spondilitis or kyphosis or something. Its not unusual for symptoms to not show till older or damper weather.

not heard of either of these what are they and how are they treated?
edit: just had a look at this on google, wouldnt spinal deeformities have shown up under an x ray? jason said everything was normal? when she runs or hops along she looks normal its only when she "walks" she is noticably lowere on the one side and having difficulty so that seems unlikely to be spondylosis?http://www.hrschicago.org/rabbit3fr.html (based on this article) she never shuffles and doesnt seem in pain ( i know they can hide it but i really dont belive she is when ever she has had the smallest ailment in the past she has gone off her food until pain meds administered) thankyou for the ideas though i apprichiate all imput.!

I really have no idea.My Lily has Kyphosis along with her brother. His spine snakes side to side,Lilys goes up and down.
At the bottom end,I have no idea but Im thinking there must be something.
Has E.C been ruled out????

no not been ruled out im tempted to put her on pannacurr for 28days to be sure no one really has thought it likely purely as this is the only symptom and its gone on so long without other symptoms appearing (plus the fact that originally the ligament was felt to be damaged)

Hmmmm.I would rule out E.C, then think of something else.
Lilys problems we came across by accident in a lung and teeth x ray.(she has malloclusion and chronic snuffles).
Does your bun drag her leg or fall over????

no she doesnt fall over ever, and doesnt drag it just almost seems like a limp its difficult to explain really she can and does put weight on it on good days but not on bad days, im concerned the other leg is now affected to. yes i think a pannacur course is in order, (nb i have vets at 0830 tommorrow so she will be seen asap) its very similar to when my elderly bunny had athritus except the x rays have ruled this out. there is no obvious swelling either.

Lily had nothing obvious, (shes 2 next month), but your bun is 5.5yrs old as you say.Hope its E.C.Do drop me a line.Im most interested.xxx

il let you know after the vets tommorrow what is suggested and obviously wont know for definate until after 28days of pannacur if any changes i suppose, will see if there are any significant other ideas that my vet has too and will let you know, dora is a stroppy bunny who doesnt really like human company but adores her arthur though i think with age she is mellowing as we can now (on her terms) stroke her head. i still love her to bits.

Bless her......xx

my vet also thinks it isnt ec but thinks its a nerve problem due to her reactions and reflexes. we have metacam for a week (though he doesnt think it will do much) and thinks its a case of stopping her jumping but allowing her gentle excersize and seeing how it goes he did say it could be a slipped disc but if it is then the only options are rest or surgery which at this point he is not willing to consider. so we will see how she continues for now i guess.

Unfortunately, I do not have any advice. However, simply wanted to offer my best and warmest wishes for a full and speedy recovery for Dora.

she is coping well htough we stopped the metacam as it wasnt changing anythign and was just stressing her out (why cant she be a metacam junnkie like coco?!!! or kitty who would mug you for it!!) still she has good and bad days she is now in a lwoer hutch and has a sponge for jumping in and out onto instead of the ramp which seems to lesson impact and help her, she is generally happy and seems pain free (vets agree) so wil continue to monitor her adn take her back if any change. x
