  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Is there any discharge from the eye ?

Is the conjunctiva (underside of eyelid) red and inflammed ?

Has your Rabbit been vaccinated against Myxomatosis ?

mmm - not looking good I am afraid - did they have a myxi jab at all prior to the one a week ago? (ie six months ago?)

can you tip him up and look at his genitals?

Are they at all swollen (basically can you see them above the surrounding fur and do they look pink and a bit puffy?)

Any discharge at all from the eye? Is it weepy - as if he has been 'crying'?

well thats good . . .

Its a difficult call re emergency vet (and as it says in the bit at the top - we are not vets so are only giving a personal opinion).

Personally if I had a rabbit exhibiting that sign at this time of year I am afraid I might leap to the myxi conclusion - however it is NOT the only conclusion. Others might include eye infection (does not look like that though . .. ) or damage to eyelid through a scratch by accident etc. So there are still other options.

A jab a week ago will not have prevented myxi as myxi taked 10-14 days to incubate so may have infected him before and also the jab takes a few days to come into force.

Re the emergency vet; Depending on how rabbit savvy they are they may or may not be able to tell at this stage what it is - they may or may not know what to give in case of myxi (antibiotics, metacam, fucithalmic and a variety of other drugs). However they will be able to give metacam and fucithalmic to help with pain and swelling and eye infection - all of which will help regardless of what is causing it.

Eyes are very tender and can get painful quickly - as normal vets are not open tomorrow I would go to an emergency vet either tonight or tomorrow morning first thing.
