  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

how long should myxi buns be under heatlamp

tricky one -

at first when trying to up the heat to beat back the first onrush of myxi virus then I tend to just let them lie under it as they want (with heat lamp obviously raised up about a metre away from them and giving them lots of room to be able to move away from it).

When nasal congestion and scabs start it is important that they also stay moist - so I turn it off for periods during the day and (if they are indoors) at night and make sure they get moisture from nebulising and also from fluids.

You may need to check their hydration levels if they are spending a lot of time lolling under it.

Really there is no reason they should not be under it as much as they want - but it is important not to give extremes of temperature (so they do not get cold for example when you switch it off . . but if indoors then it should just be providing a gentle extra boost).

They tend to love it - like lying in a pool if sunshine@!
